 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The Zonta Club of  Oak  Park  was  organized  in
 3    February  of 1934 and chartered on May 26 of that year as the
 4    127th chapter of Zonta  International,  a  worldwide  service
 5    organization  of  executives  in business and the professions
 6    organized in 1919 to advance the status of women; and

 7        WHEREAS, Throughout its "herstory", the Zonta Club of Oak
 8    Park has supported many local organizations, financially  and
 9    through service; and

10        WHEREAS,  The  Zonta  Club of Oak Park supports the Young
11    Women in Public Affairs scholarship  program  by  recognizing
12    and  awarding  scholarships  to  local high school seniors to
13    encourage  these  young  women  to  enter  careers  or   seek
14    leadership  positions in social policymaking, government, and
15    volunteer organizations; and

16        WHEREAS, The Zonta Club of Oak Park financially  supports
17    the  Amelia  Earhart fellowship award program founded in 1938
18    to   support   women    pursuing    graduate    degrees    in
19    aerospace-related  sciences and engineering and has supported
20    more than 500 women  from  48  countries  in  more  than  800
21    fellowships; and

22        WHEREAS,  The  Zonta  Club  of  Oak Park also financially
23    supports the international service project selected by  Zonta
24    International  through  the  United  Nations and has directly
25    affected the fate  of  more  than  700,000  women  and  girls
26    through  projects in Argentina, Bangladesh, Botswana, Burkina
27    Faso, Columbia, the Comoros Islands, Ghana, Guatemala, India,
28    Jordan, Mexico, the Philippines, Senegal, South  Africa,  Sri
29    Lanka, Thailand, and Zimbabwe; and

30        WHEREAS,  The  Zonta Club of Oak Park has supported other
31    projects in literacy, the eradication  of  domestic  violence

 1    and   internationalism,   and  a  student  exchange  and  has
 2    sponsored with other Zonta Clubs receptions  for  new  United
 3    States  citizens  at the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago;
 4    therefore, be it

 5        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
 6    NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
 7    we recognize the accomplishments of the  Zonta  Club  of  Oak
 8    Park   and   acknowledge   and  thank  the  chapter  for  its
 9    contributions to the State of Illinois; and be it further

10        RESOLVED, That we proclaim May 26, 1999 "The  Zonta  Club
11    of Oak Park Day" in Illinois; and be it further

12        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
13    presented to the Zonta Club of Oak Park.
