 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives  wish to express their sincere condolences to
 4    the family and friends of Dr. Alvenia  Fulton,  who  recently
 5    passed away; and

 6        WHEREAS, Dr. Fulton was born in Pulaski, Tennessee on May
 7    17, 1906; her parents were Richard and Mahala Moody; and

 8        WHEREAS,  Dr.  Fulton  is  survived by her sister, Esther
 9    Moody; her grandson, Robert Gray, Jr.; her nephews, George W.
10    Brown and Robin Brown; her nieces, Mahala Lewis  and  Phillis
11    Moody;  her great-grandsons, Harvey Gray and Robert Gray; her
12    great-granddaughters, Sandra Henry and Denise Gray;  as  well
13    as nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends;
14    and

15        WHEREAS,  Dr.  Fulton is recognized as the first woman to
16    enter and graduate from Greater Payne  Theological  Seminary;
17    as the first woman to become a member of the Northern Alabama
18    Conference  of  the  A.M.E.  Church  and  to make a report as
19    pastor of an  A.M.E.  Church,  St.  Stephens  in  Birmingham,
20    Alabama;  she  was  the first woman ordained in the Tennessee
21    Annual Conference; she was the first woman appointed  to  the
22    State Board of the Ohio Council of Churches; and

23        WHEREAS,  Dr. Fulton was the first African-American to be
24    appointed to the Board of  Directors  of  the  Department  of
25    Regulatory  Services Practice Board in the State of Illinois;
26    she was  the  first  to  open  a  health  food  store  in  an
27    African-American  neighborhood;  she  was the first to open a
28    vegetarian restaurant in her neighborhood as well; and

29        WHEREAS, Dr. Fulton traveled and lectured on the subjects
30    of Nutrition and Naturopathic Medicine across the country and
31    in Africa, Europe, and the Far East; she was  known  as  "The

 1    Queen  of Nutrition" and "Dietician to the Stars" for helping
 2    show athletes and movie and  television  stars  how  to  live
 3    better through good nutrition; and

 4        WHEREAS,  Dr.  Fulton  pastored  three  churches  in  the
 5    African  Methodist  Episcopal  Church:  St.  Johns  A.M.E. in
 6    Louisville, Kentucky,  St.  Stephens  A.M.E.  in  Birmingham,
 7    Alabama,  and  St. Johns A.M.E. in Manhattan, Kansas; she met
 8    and married her husband, the late Rev. O.M. Fulton during her
 9    time as a pastor; and

10        WHEREAS, She was a graduate of  the  Lincoln  College  of
11    Naturopathy  and  Natural Medicines in Indianapolis, Indiana;
12    she was elected Secretary of the Natural Doctors  Convention,
13    later  named  the  Holistic  Doctor's Convention; she was the
14    author of "The Fasting Primer", "The  Nutrition  Bible",  and
15    "Vegetarianism: Fact or Myth"; and

16        WHEREAS,  Dr.  Fulton appeared in a newspaper column, and
17    was the regular  host  of  the  radio  program  "The  Joy  of
18    Living"; and

19        WHEREAS,  She was honored as a Registered Holistic Health
20    Practitioner with the American  Association  of  Nutrition  &
21    Dietary  Consultants,  and  the  Crystal  Springs  Health and
22    Beauty Products; she was also elected  as  a  Fellow  in  the
23    Society  for Nutrition and Preventive Medicine; therefore, be
24    it

25        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
26    NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
27    we mourn, along with her family and friends, the death of Dr.
28    Alvenia Fulton; truly her  acquaintances  and  her  community
29    have lost a treasured commodity; and be it further

30        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
31    presented to the family of Dr. Alvenia Fulton.
