1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate Charles E. Gaines on the
4 occasion of his 75th birthday; and
5 WHEREAS, Charles Gaines was born on January 16, 1924; his
6 parents were Attorney Harris B. Gaines and Dr. Irene McCoy
7 Gaines; his mother served as President of the National
8 Association of Colored Women; and
9 WHEREAS, Charles Gaines is the first African American to
10 succeed his father as a member of the Illinois General
11 Assembly; Harris Gaines served in the House of
12 Representatives from 1929 to 1935, and Charles served in the
13 House from 1975 to 1981; and
14 WHEREAS, Charles Gaines is the proud father of Dr. Cheryl
15 Gaines and Michael Gaines, an educator; and
16 WHEREAS, Charles Gaines is a graduate of the Chicago
17 Public School System and the University of Illinois; he has
18 served with the Chatham-Avalon Park Community Council, the
19 Chatham Business Association, the Straight Talk Economic
20 Roundtable, Alpha Phi Alpha, and the 6th Ward Republican
21 Organization; he is a member of the Commonwealth Community
22 Church and the United Council of Christian Men; therefore, be
23 it
24 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
25 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
26 we congratulate Charles E. Gaines on his 75th birthday; our
27 good wishes and continuous blessings go with him on this
28 special occasion; and be it further
29 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
30 presented to Charles E. Gaines.
