1 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The Slovak Republic is a free, democratic, and
3 independent nation with a long and proud history; and
4 WHEREAS, The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is
5 dedicated to the preservation of freedom and security of its
6 member nations; and
7 WHEREAS, The Slovak Republic desires to share in both the
8 benefits and obligations of NATO in pursuing the development,
9 growth, and promotion of democratic institutions and ensuring
10 free market economic development; and
11 WHEREAS, The Slovak Republic recognizes its
12 responsibilities as a democratic nation and wishes to
13 exercise such responsibilities in concert with members of
14 NATO; and
15 WHEREAS, The Slovak Republic desires to become part of
16 NATO's efforts to prevent the extremes of nationalism; and
17 WHEREAS, The security of the United States is dependent
18 upon the stability of central Europe; therefore, be it
19 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
21 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we respectfully urge the
22 President of the United States and the Congress of the United
23 States to support the Slovak Republic's petition for
24 admission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization; and be
25 it further
26 RESOLVED, That we respectfully urge Congress to support
27 the establishment of a timetable for the admission of the
28 Slovak Republic to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization;
29 and be it further
30 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be

1 forwarded to the President of the United States, the Speaker
2 of the United States House of Representatives, the President
3 of the United States Senate, each member of the Illinois
4 congressional delegation, and to the Ambassador of the Slovak
5 Republic.
