 1        AN ACT to amend the School Code by changing Section 27-22
 2    and repealing Section 27-22.3.

 3        Be  it  enacted  by  the People of the State of Illinois,
 4    represented in the General Assembly:

 5        Section 5.   The  School  Code  is  amended  by  changing
 6    Section 27-22 as follows:

 7        (105 ILCS 5/27-22) (from Ch. 122, par. 27-22)
 8        Sec.   27-22.    Required  high  school  courses.   As  a
 9    prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma,  each  pupil
10    entering  the  9th  grade  in  the  1999-2000  1984-1985  and
11    subsequent  school  years  must,  in addition to other course
12    requirements, successfully complete the following courses:
13             1.  three years of language arts;
14             2.  two years of mathematics, one of  which  may  be
15        related to computer technology;
16             3.  one year of science;
17             4.  two  years  of social studies, of which at least
18        one year must be  history  of  the  United  States  or  a
19        combination  of history of the United States and American
20        government; and
21             5.  one year chosen from (A)  music,  (B)  art,  (C)
22        foreign  language,  which  shall  be  deemed  to  include
23        American Sign Language or (D) vocational education; and.
24             6.  one  semester  of  participation  in a community
25        service credit course.
26        This amendatory Act of 1999 1983 does not apply to pupils
27    entering the 9th grade in the 1998-1999 1983-1984 school year
28    and prior school years or to students with disabilities whose
29    course of study is determined by an individualized  education
30    program.
31        The  provisions  of  this  Section  are  subject  to  the

 1    provisions of Section 27-22.05.
 2        Each school district shall establish the necessary rules,
 3    regulations,  and  procedures  applicable to its one semester
 4    community service credit course and shall award  high  school
 5    graduation credit for a pupil's participation in that course.
 6    However,  neither  community  service  for which a student is
 7    paid nor community service that is assigned or performed as a
 8    disciplinary measure shall  qualify  as  participation  in  a
 9    community  service credit program meeting the requirements of
10    this Section.

13        Section 10.  The School  Code  is  amended  by  repealing
14    Section 27-22.3.

15        Section  99.  Effective date.  This Act takes effect upon
16    becoming law.
