          Amends the School Code.  Makes gender neutral  references
      in  the Article applying to school districts in cities having
      a population exceeding 500,000.

 1        AN ACT to amend the School Code by changing Section 34-6.
 2        Be it enacted by the People of  the  State  of  Illinois,
 3    represented in the General Assembly:
 4        Section  5.   The  School  Code  is  amended  by changing
 5    Section 34-6 as follows:
 6        (105 ILCS 5/34-6) (from Ch. 122, par. 34-6)
 7        Sec. 34-6.  Superintendent of  schools.  After  June  30,
 8    1999,  the  board  may,  by  a vote of a majority of its full
 9    membership, appoint a general superintendent  of  schools  to
10    serve  pursuant  to  a  performance-based contract for a term
11    ending on June 30th of the third calendar year after  his  or
12    her appointment.  He or she shall be the chief administrative
13    officer  of  the  board  and  shall  have charge and control,
14    subject to the approval of the board and to other  provisions
15    of this Article, of all departments and the employees therein
16    of public schools, except the law department. He or she shall
17    negotiate  contracts  with  all labor organizations which are
18    exclusive representatives of educational  employees  employed
19    under  the  Illinois  Educational  Labor  Relations  Act. All
20    contracts shall be  subject  to  approval  of  the  Board  of
21    Education.  The  board  may  conduct  a national search for a
22    general superintendent.  An incumbent general  superintendent
23    may  not  be  precluded  from being included in such national
24    search. Persons appointed pursuant to this Section  shall  be
25    exempt from the provisions and requirements of Sections 21-1,
26    21-1a and 21-7.1.
