 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives  is  proud
 3    to acknowledge milestones within the State of Illinois; and
 4        WHEREAS,  On  May  6,  1998,  a  milestone was set in the
 5    hallowed confines of a baseball stadium  on  Chicago's  north
 6    side;  at  1060  West  Addison, in Wrigley Field, the Chicago
 7    Cubs faced the Houston Astros, and a fellow Texan named Kerry
 8    Wood was about to show  the  Astros  that  he  did  not  play
 9    favorites; and
10        WHEREAS,  Kerry  Wood  is from Irving, Texas, the home of
11    the Dallas Cowboys football team; at the young age of  twenty
12    years  old  he is already being compared to Roger Clemens and
13    Nolan Ryan, both of whom were and are star pitchers;  in  the
14    game against Houston, Kerry Wood tied the major league record
15    with  twenty  strikeouts in pitching a one hit game;  he tied
16    the record set by Roger Clemens against Seattle in  1986  and
17    matched by Clemens versus Detroit in 1996; and
18        WHEREAS,  After  starting only five times, Kerry Wood has
19    shown that he has an idea on how to get  to  Cooperstown  and
20    the  Baseball  Hall  of Fame; as a rookie he still has a long
21    way to go, but after his strong showing on Wednesday, May  6,
22    1998,  he  is  closer  to becoming a name synonymous with the
23    greats in baseball; and
24        WHEREAS, Kerry Wood now stands next to Roger Clemens with
25    the most strikeouts; he enters an elite group including Randy
26    Johnson, David Cone, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver,  Steve  Carlton,
27    Sandy  Koufax,  Bob  Feller,  Don Wilson, Ramon Martinez, Ron
28    Guidry, and Bill Gullickson; the Cub's record was  broken  by
29    Kerry  Wood  yesterday,  when  he bypassed fifteen strikeouts
30    held by former pitchers Rick Sutcliffe, Burt Hooton, and Dick
31    Drott; Kerry  Wood  beat  the  rookie  record  held  by  Bill
32    Gullickson  with eighteen strikeouts; and he beat the Wrigley

 1    Field record held by Sandy Koufax since 1962,  with  eighteen
 2    strikeouts; therefore, be it
 3        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
 4    NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that  we
 5    congratulate  Kerry  Wood and the Chicago Cubs for a job well
 6    done on Wednesday, May  6,  1998;  we  wish  Kerry  continued
 7    success  in  his  future, and look forward to more games like
 8    this record setter; and be it further
 9        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
10    presented  to  Kerry  Wood  and  the  Chicago  Cubs  baseball
11    organization.
