1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The YWCA Women of Achievement Awards Benefit
3 honors Grace Mary Stern as the recipient of its Life Time
4 Achievement Award; and
5 WHEREAS, She was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and
6 attended Wellesley College; she is the mother of ten
7 children; and
8 WHEREAS, Grace Mary Stern held elective office in
9 Illinois for more than twenty-five years, beginning in 1967,
10 serving in both the Illinois House of Representatives from
11 1985 until 1993 and in the Illinois Senate from 1993 until
12 1994; and
13 WHEREAS, Before she was elected to the House, she served
14 as a member of the Lake County Board and as Lake County
15 Clerk; and
16 WHEREAS, She blazed new trails for women in the political
17 arena, including being the first woman to run for Lieutenant
18 Governor; and
19 WHEREAS, Grace Mary Stern has been a tireless advocate
20 for quality education for all of Illinois' children, for
21 mental health services for those who can not adequately speak
22 for themselves, and for campaign and "good government"
23 reforms; and
24 WHEREAS, Grace Mary Stern has been a champion of ideas
25 she believes in despite personal political risk and is indeed
26 worthy of our highest praise; therefore, be it
27 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
28 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
29 congratulate Grace Mary Stern as she is honored by the YWCA
30 as the recipient of the Life Time Achievement Award; and be
