 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS, The Centralia Historical Hall of Fame has chosen
 3    its inductees into the Hall for 1998; and
 4        WHEREAS, Marcellus J. Newman, who passed away in  Meeker,
 5    Oklahoma in November of 1905, will be inducted into the Hall;
 6    and
 7        WHEREAS,  Marcellus  Newman  received  the  Congressional
 8    Medal  of  Honor  for rescuing a wounded comrade in the Civil
 9    War; he was one of only six people from the Centralia area to
10    receive the Medal of Honor, and  one  of  only  3,500  people
11    nationwide; and
12        WHEREAS,   Marcellus   Newman  was  born  in  1835  on  a
13    Washington County farm near Richview; he enlisted in  Company
14    B  of  the  111th Illinois Regiment at Richview on August 13,
15    1862, and was mustered in at Salem  on  September  18,  1862;
16    while serving hospital duty because of a physical disability,
17    Mr.  Newman  rescued  John F. Chandler of Marion County while
18    the rest of the regiment was falling back; on June 6, 1865 he
19    was discharged and  returned  to  his  family  in  Washington
20    County;  the family later moved to Oklahoma, where Mr. Newman
21    passed away; therefore, be it
22        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
23    NINETIETH  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
24    congratulate the Centralia Historical Hall of Fame  on  their
25    choices for inclusion into the Hall; and be it further
26        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
27    presented to the Centralia Historical Hall of Fame.
