 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives is pleased
 3    to honor Fannie G. Jones of East St. Louis, Illinois, for her
 4    willingness to be a community leader; and
 5        WHEREAS, Fannie Jones is the  youngest  of  six  children
 6    born  to  Henry  and  Rosie Jones; she was educated in Dunbar
 7    Elementary School and Lincoln Jr. and Sr. High  School,  both
 8    within  District 189; she received her Bachelor's Degree from
 9    Tuskegee Institute  and  her  Master's  Degree  from  Webster
10    University;  Ms. Jones taught first grade at Franklin School,
11    and then entered politics, running for the office of Clerk of
12    the Supreme Court; Ms. Jones was the first  black  person  to
13    run  for  statewide  office  in  Illinois;  after  losing the
14    election, she returned  to  work,  for  two  years  with  the
15    Illinois  State  Library as a Consultant, four years with the
16    Illinois  State  Board  of  Education   as   an   Educational
17    Specialist,  and  ending  her  thirty-eight  year  career  in
18    education  as  a  Title  One  Specialist  in  East  St. Louis
19    District 189; and
20        WHEREAS, In her early days as an educator,  Fannie  Jones
21    saw  the  need  for  the  boys and girls of East St. Louis to
22    experience nature and God's outdoor wonders; as a  result  of
23    her ideas, a two week camp was formed with support from local
24    and area Baptist ministers and Baptist Women's leader, Canary
25    Humphrey  Jefferson; for thirty-eight years the camp, located
26    at Pere Marquette State Park's Camp Ouatoga has been the home
27    for over 5,000 youth; Ms. Jones' fellow teachers  volunteered
28    as  camp  counselors,  and  local  church  fraternal  groups,
29    newspapers,   sororities,   and   women's   clubs   sponsored
30    camperships;    grants    have   been   received   from   the
31    Intergovernmental Agency of St. Clair County,  the  East  St.
32    Louis  Township,  Monsanto,  Cerro  Copper,  and  the  City's
33    Community  Fund;  several  local  churches  also  continue to

 1    support the camp; and
 2        WHEREAS, Fannie Jones has  received  many  accolades  and
 3    awards for her community service including: Woman of the Year
 4    (Pro  Eight  Club),  East  St. Louis Park District, St. Clair
 5    County Democratic  Party,  East  St.  Louis  Democratic  City
 6    Central  Committee,  Greater  New  Hope Baptist Church Golden
 7    Leaves, Delta Sigma Theta Wise Owl  Award,  Sigma  Gamma  Rho
 8    Outstanding  Service, Truelight Baptist Church Recognition as
 9    Former church Clerk, East St. Louis Beauticians,  recognition
10    from  late  Congressman  Melvin  Price,  late Senator Kenneth
11    Hall,  Congressman  Jerry  Costello,  and  Southern  Illinois
12    University at Edwardsville; and
13        WHEREAS, Fannie Jones is President  of  the  Lee-Campbell
14    Ministry   at   Greater   New  Hope  Baptist  Church,  Fourth
15    Vice-President of the Baptist  General  State  Convention  of
16    Illinois  Woman's  Auxiliary,  Vice-Chairman  of the Culinary
17    Committee at Greater New Hope and Assistant Membership  where
18    Reverend  David  Crochett  is  Pastor; she is Chairman of the
19    Board of Election Commission and  former  Chairman  of  Youth
20    Literature of the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A.; and
21        WHEREAS,  Fannie  Jones is the mother of one son, Carlton
22    Juan Jones, a teacher and Basketball Coach  at  Cahokia  High
23    School;  she  has  one  granddaughter,  Shenise D. Jones, who
24    attends Harding Elementary  School;  she  has  one  grandson,
25    Carlton  Juan Jones II, who attends Lessie Bates Daycare; two
26    sisters, Rishia Randolph and  Luretha  Phillips;  one  foster
27    brother,   Maurice   Sharp;  three  nieces,  Tunya  Robinson,
28    Stephanie Jones, and Pam Jones; one niece-in-law, Dr. Rosalyn
29    Phillips; and one nephew Dr. Aaron L. Phillips; therefore, be
30    it
31        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
32    NINETIETH  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

 1    honor Fannie Jones for her outstanding community service  and
 2    her dedication to the people of East St. Louis, Illinois; and
 3    be it further
 4        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
 5    presented to Fannie G. Jones, with our  sincere  good  wishes
 6    for her future.
