HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Billy McDaniel on the occasion of his retirement as Mayor of the City of Metropolis; and

WHEREAS, Mayor McDaniel has faithfully served the citizens of Metropolis for 20 years; he first served as alderman for Ward Three from 2001 to 2005 and then as mayor from 2005 to 2021; and

WHEREAS, Prior to public service, Mayor McDaniel was the owner for 32 years of Bill's Bar-B-Q, a business started by his father in 1965; and

WHEREAS, During his time in public office, Mayor McDaniel has been a part of many improvements for Metropolis, including the industrial park, a state-of-the-art soccer complex and baseball facility, a new water plant, and programs for seniors and youth; and

WHEREAS, Mayor McDaniel's steady leadership shepherded Metropolis through several natural disasters, including the 200-year flood in 2011 and the 150-year ice storm in 2009; and

WHEREAS, Mayor McDaniel has been a welcoming presence to the many visitors of Metropolis particularly during the annual Superman Celebration and the Fort Massac Encampment, which each bring tens of thousands of tourists; and

WHEREAS, Mayor McDaniel is noted for his hard work as mayor and his dedication to the position, maintaining an open-door policy and working an estimated 51,000 hours; and

WHEREAS, In his spare time, Mayor McDaniel enjoys spending time with his wife of 52 years, Betty, and their daughter, Robbin; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Metropolis Mayor Billy McDaniel on his retirement, thank him for his service, and wish him the best in all his future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Billy McDaniel as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
