| SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate of the State of | 3 |
| Illinois were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Michael | 4 |
| Davis of Evanston on September 7, 2004; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Michael Davis was born in County Galway, Ireland | 6 |
| in 1939; he came to the United States with his mother and | 7 |
| brother when he was ten years old; the family settled in the | 8 |
| Chicago area; and
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Davis graduated from St. Sabrina Grade School | 10 |
| and St. Ignatius College Prep; he graduated with honors from | 11 |
| John Carroll University in 1962 and earned a law degree from | 12 |
| Georgetown University in 1965; and
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, Following his admission to the Illinois Bar, Mr. | 14 |
| Davis was briefly employed by the National Labor Relations | 15 |
| Board; his employment with the Board was interrupted when he | 16 |
| was ordered to active duty in the Judge Advocate General's | 17 |
| Corps of the United States Army in January of 1966; he was | 18 |
| assigned to the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, Eighth Army | 19 |
| Support Command in Seoul, Korea where he prosecuted major | 20 |
| felonies and advised commanders from May of 1966 to July of | 21 |
| 1967; and

| WHEREAS, Upon returning to Chicago, Mr. Davis joined the | 23 |
| prominent law firm, Lord, Bissell & Brook LLP, where he | 24 |
| practiced law for 34 years; he became partner five years later | 25 |
| and he retired in 2002 after serving as the firm's Chief | 26 |
| Operating Officer for twelve years; and

| WHEREAS, Mr. Davis also served as Paddock Publications' | 28 |
| primary libel counsel for the better part of two decades and | 29 |
| was a member of the company's board of directors; in addition, | 30 |
| he served as a legal adviser to the Daily Herald, which is |

| owned by Paddock Publications; he defended the paper against | 2 |
| claims of defamation, invasion of privacy, and other issues of | 3 |
| liability and was known as "a great advocate of the business of | 4 |
| journalism"; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Davis was the recipient of the President's | 6 |
| Award for loyal and generous service to St. Ignatius College | 7 |
| Prep; he served on the Board of Boy's Hope Girl's Hope of | 8 |
| Illinois and on the President's Council at John Carroll | 9 |
| University; and
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Michael Davis will be deeply felt | 11 |
| by many, especially his wife, Barbara; his children, Elizabeth | 12 |
| and Michael; and his brother Bartholomew; therefore, be it
| 13 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL | 14 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of | 15 |
| Michael Davis along with all who knew and loved him and extend | 16 |
| our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and be it | 17 |
| further
| 18 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 19 |
| presented to the family of Michael Davis as an expression of | 20 |
| our deepest sympathy.
