SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with great sadness of the passing of Sister Mary Luke
4 Makuch of Chicago on December 18, 2003; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Born in Szaflary, Poland, Sister Mary Luke Makuch
6 worked in an orphanage in Sadowa Wisznia where she and another
7 Felician nun helped shepherd 35 Jewish children to safety
8 during a trek across Poland during World War II; although the
9 group frequently encountered German troops, no one questioned
10 the identities of the children or the Jewish mother who walked
11 with them; the sisters delivered their charges unharmed, but
12 flying shrapnel left Sister Luke with a deep scar on one arm;
13 and
 
14     WHEREAS, Sister Luke came to Chicago in 1965, and served as
15 a cook at convents including St. Bruno, St. Wenceslaus and
16 Mother of Good Counsel provincialate headquarters; at times,
17 she worked as a seamstress; and
 
18     WHEREAS, During Pope John Paul II's visit to Cardinal Cody,
19 Sister Luke headed a staff of four Felician sisters who
20 prepared meals at Cardinal Cody's residence; she renewed her
21 acquaintance with the holy father, whom she had known in Poland
22 before he was named pope; and
 
23     WHEREAS, Sister Mary Luke Makuch is survived by her
24 brother, John; and
 
25     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
26 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
27 Sister Mary Luke Makuch along with all who knew and loved her
28 and extend our sincere condolences to her family and friends;
29 and be it further

1     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2 presented to the family of Sister Mary Luke Makuch as an
3 expression of our deepest sympathy.
