HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of David
4Nathaniel Johnson, who passed away on May 15, 2021 at the age
5of 72; and
 
6    WHEREAS, David Johnson grew up in Harvey; he graduated
7from Thornton Township High School in Harvey, where he was
8later inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame; he graduated from
9Howard University; he later earned his graduate degree in
10Political Science from Rutgers University; and
 
11    WHEREAS, David Johnson served as the first Black mayor of
12Harvey for three consecutive terms from 1983 to 1995; during
13his tenure, he was noted for his diligence to the city and for
14being well respected among area elected officials; and
 
15    WHEREAS, David Johnson was a professor of African History,
16African American History, Political Science, Sociology, and
17Urban Studies at South Suburban College for 36 years, and he
18taught over 10,000 students during his teaching career; he
19retired as chairman of the Department of Social and Behavioral
20Sciences in 2008; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Throughout his retirement, David Johnson

1continued his service to the community; he was a proud Howard
2University Bison and a passionate advocate for Historically
3Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); and
 
4    WHEREAS, David Johnson was known for being intellectual,
5insightful, and enlightening; he was a lifelong student and
6exemplified excellence in everything he did; he will be
7remembered for the enduring impact he made on the lives of
8those he met; and
 
9    WHEREAS, David Johnson is survived by his wife of 26
10years, Bonnye Johnson; his daughters, Naima and Iman; and his
11siblings; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
13HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14we mourn the passing of David Nathaniel Johnson and extend our
15sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
16and loved him; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of David Johnson as an expression of
19our deepest sympathy.
