SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Captain Antoine Marvin Lewis; and

WHEREAS, Captain Antoine Lewis was born in Chicago to Rodney A. Sr. and Antoinette Lewis on May 9, 1979; he graduated from Rich Central High School in 1997; he was very studious and felt it was important to understand history and African culture; he joined the U.S. Army as a track vehicle mechanic and spent his first three years stationed in Germany; and

WHEREAS, Captain Antoine Lewis left the military and spent some time as a civilian recruiter; he worked as an interstate truck driver and, after visiting most of the big cities in the U.S., felt that Chicago was the greatest of them all; and

WHEREAS, Captain Antoine Lewis re-enlisted in the military as a motor transport/truck driver; he soon decided to become a logistical officer; he attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant Transportation Officer in 2011; after achieving his goal of becoming an officer, he continued to travel the world, visiting Germany, Kosovo, Ghana, France, the Dominican Republic, China, Ireland, Thailand, the Philippines, and Canada; during this time, he completed his Bachelor of Arts in Business Management from Strayer University; and

WHEREAS, Captain Antoine Lewis was serving in Afghanistan in 2012 when he met Yalena Lopez; he was stationed in Korea from 2015 to 2017; he and Yalena were married on March 25, 2018; and

WHEREAS, After 14 years of military service, Captain Antoine Lewis was a highly decorated captain and received numerous awards and honors; and

WHEREAS, Captain Antoine Lewis was committed to life-long learning, loved all people, attended church faithfully, and was devoted to illuminating the beauty and richness of Africa; and

WHEREAS, Captain Antoine Lewis was preceded in death by his sister, Kristina Lynn Lewis; and

WHEREAS, Captain Antoine Lewis is survived by his wife, Yalena Lopez-Lewis, his sons, Antoine Marvin Lewis Jr. and Messiah Phelps; his parents; and his siblings, Ronetta Hoskins, Rodney (Terry) Lewis Jr., Antoinette Lewis Jr., Monica (Marcus) Wilson, Markita Lewis, Michael Lewis, and Angelo Lewis; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Captain Antoine Marvin Lewis and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Captain Antoine Lewis as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
