HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Recently, land near Dwight was rezoned to allow for the operation of an immigration detention center; and

WHEREAS, The Virginia-based Immigration Centers of America is in the process of securing a federal contract to build an immigration detention center to serve the Chicago area that would house an estimated 1,000 people; and

WHEREAS, Housing, transporting, and watching over migrant children detained along the southwest border has become a multibillion dollar business for private companies; and

WHEREAS, This lucrative and secretive business is mired in controversial practices such as breaking up families and locking children in cages; and

WHEREAS, Profiting off of putting people in cages is morally bankrupt and not something that the State of Illinois should be supporting; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the State of Illinois to divest from any for-profit companies that contract to shelter migrant children; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be delivered to the Illinois State Board of Investment, the State Universities Retirement System, the Teachers' Retirement System, and the Office of the Governor.
