SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Donna Ruth Kuhlman of Savoy, who passed away on December 19, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Donna Kuhlman was born in Galesburg to Floyd and Doris Walker on June 2, 1938 and raised on a farm in Knox County; growing up, she was active in 4-H and won numerous county and state awards for sewing and cooking; she was awarded the 4-H Key Club Award for her outstanding projects and activities; she graduated from Western Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and married Don Kuhlman in Galva on June 24, 1962; and

WHEREAS, Donna Kuhlman was employed as an Assistant Home Adviser in Adams County by the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service; she taught high school in Gillespie from 1961 to 1962; and

WHEREAS, Donna Kuhlman was an excellent cook and seamstress and judged sewing projects at the Illinois State Fair for several years; she also collected cookbooks and thousands of recipes and enjoyed preparing many delicious meals for her family and friends; she was outgoing and enjoyed helping others; she was an avid Illini football and basketball fan; she and Don had season tickets for 50 years and traveled to football games in every Big 10 football stadium; and

WHEREAS, Donna Kuhlman was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Champaign; she served as a Congregational Care Deacon and was a member of the Circle of Joy, Prayer Ministry Team, and Pakistan Study Group; she served as a 4-H Club leader in Montgomery County and a Cub Scout leader in Champaign; she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, where she served as an officer; she was a member of the Champaign-Urbana Home Economists, where she served as treasurer from 2003 to 2006; she was also a member of the Women's Club at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and

WHEREAS, Donna Kuhlman enjoyed flowers and birds, especially cardinals; at various times, she had six to eight different types of bird feeders, including one that she fashioned herself that was very effective in protecting seed and birds from predators; and

WHEREAS, Donna Kuhlman accompanied her husband to Peshawar, Pakistan from 1992 to 1994, where Don worked on a project funded by USAID; she enjoyed living in Pakistan and made many Pakistani friends; she and Don enjoyed traveling to Egypt, India, Thailand, China, Eastern Europe, Europe, Africa, and throughout the U.S.; and

WHEREAS, Donna Kuhlman and Don celebrated her 70th birthday on June 2nd on a cruise to Alaska; while in Alaska, they flew in a ski plane around Mt. McKinley and landed on Ruth Glacier; and

WHEREAS, Donna Kuhlman was preceded in death by her parents; and

WHEREAS, Donna Kuhlman is survived by her sons, David and Daniel Kuhlman, and numerous cousins; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Donna Ruth Kuhlman, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Donna Kuhlman as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
