SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Helen Burns Jackson, who passed away on
4September 7, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Helen Jackson was born on November 9, 1923 in
6Greenville County, South Carolina; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Helen Jackson received her early education in the
8public schools of Greenville and, because of her extraordinary
9singing voice, earned a music scholarship to attend Talladega
10College in Alabama; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Helen Jackson earned her license in cosmetology
12and owned and operated the Helen B. Jackson Beauty Salon for
13many years; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Helen Jackson was baptized at an early age at
15Springfield Baptist Church in Greenville, South Carolina; she
16later joined the Long Branch Baptist Church, and then the
17Piedmont Manor Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir,
18delighting parishioners with her soprano voice, served on the
19Missionary Society, and participated in a host of other church
20ministries; and

1    WHEREAS, Helen Jackson was a feminist who challenged molds
2long before the feminist movement became popular; she took an
3interest in many hobbies, including interior decorating,
4cosmetology, spending time with her family, and especially
5serving her community through numerous organizations,
6including the Boards of Directors of the Phyllis Wheatley
7Center, the Y.W.C.A., Greenville Technical College, the Trip
8Advisory Committee, and the Greenville Family Advocate; she was
9also a member of the Democratic Women's Organization, a
10founding member of the first Greenville Cosmetology Club, and a
11member of the 9th District of the South Carolina State
12Cosmetology Association; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Helen Jackson was preceded in death by her loving
14husband of 40 years, Charles Henry Jackson, Sr.; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Helen Jackson is survived by her sons, Rev. Jesse
16L. Jackson, Sr. and his wife, Jacqueline, and Charles Henry
17Jackson, Jr., and his wife, Cheryl; her grandchildren, Santita,
18Jesse, Jr. (Sandra), Jonathan (Marilyn), Felicia, Reginald
19(mother, Evelyn), Yusef (Amaya), Jacqueline, II, Corey
20(Shanine), Candace, Crystal, Najma, (Chris and Evelyn Hurst),
21and Ashley; her great-grandchildren, Jocelyn, Jonathan,
22Jessica, Leah, Noah, Skye, Cali, Jesse, III, Christian, Akemi,
23Yusef, Cassius, Corey, Chaileal, Evelyn, Atticus, Matthias,
24Blythe Eden, and Roman; her cousins, Phillip Jossey, Lisa Junco

1(Al), Maria Owen (Othel, Sr.), Kathleen McCants (Andre), Linda
2Matuszak (David), Phillip, Lisa, and Lydia; and her many other
3relatives and special friends; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
5ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her
6family and friends, mourn the passing of Helen Burns Jackson;
7and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the family of Helen Jackson as an expression of
10our sympathy.
