SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Alice Lucille Tregay of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Alice Tregay was born in Evanston on November 14, 1929 to Roy and Fannie (nee Fuller) Hicks; she lived in Evanston for most of her young life, attending Foster School and Evanston Township High School; in 1947, she married Vincent Lindsey; in 1964, after the passing of her husband, she married James Tregay; as an adult, she went back to school and attended Southeast Jr. College (now Olive-Harvey) and Roosevelt University; and

WHEREAS, Alice Tregay was an integral part of the group that from 1962 to 1966 protested school overcrowding and segregation in black neighborhoods; she was also involved in helping to put an end to housing discrimination; she worked closely with Operation Breadbasket (now Rainbow PUSH) in its struggle against discrimination against people of color in the hiring practices of large companies; and

WHEREAS, Alice Tregay was very active in politics; she worked for numerous elected officials, including Aldermen William Cousins and Abner Mikva, Congressman Ralph Metcalfe, President Jimmy Carter, Vice-President Walter Mondale, Mayor Harold Washington, and United States Senator Carol Mosley Braun; she also worked on the presidential campaigns of Rev. Jesse Jackson; she was chief lobbyist for the Black Illinois Legislative Lobby as part of her work with The Woodlawn Organization; after discovering the key to a successful election was voter registration, she became instrumental in the creation of the Political Education Division of Rainbow PUSH, becoming the Director until her retirement; and

WHEREAS, Alice Tregay has been recognized for her outstanding work in civil rights and community service by numerous organizations and has received many prestigious awards, most notably one presented to her in March of 2004 by Illinois State Senator Barack Obama; and

WHEREAS, Alice Tregay was always a hard worker and worked all her life at various jobs; she worked for the Illinois Department of Human Rights for 8 years; and

WHEREAS, Alice Tregay is survived by her husband, James; her 3 children, Alice (Robert) Fluegge, David (Clare) Tregay, and Dawn Emmett; her 6 children, Derrick (Rachel) Fluegge, Adam (Janette) Hickman, Jason Hickman, Robert (Heather) Fluegge, and Rachel and Erika Emmett; her 10 great-grandchildren; her brother, Sanders (Karen) Hicks; and numerous cousins and friends who were also her family; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Alice Lucille Tregay, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Alice Tregay as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
