| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 |
| learn of the death of Dr. Claude Hiles of Glen Carbon, who | 4 |
| passed away on December 12, 2008; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Claude Hiles was born on May 15, 1923, in Granite | 6 |
| City, the son of Joseph and Lena Hiles, where he lived until | 7 |
| moving to Glen Carbon in 1962; he married Audrey Sheppard on | 8 |
| March 26, 1948, in Granite City; and
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, A member of the greatest generation, he left his | 10 |
| job at American Steel in Granite City and enlisted in the | 11 |
| United States Navy, becoming a Pharmacists Mate First Class in | 12 |
| the Medical Corp; he earned a Bronze Star, participating in the | 13 |
| invasion and subsequent Philippine Liberation; like many in the | 14 |
| Corp at that time, he donated his own vitamins and medicine to | 15 |
| those on the Island in greater need; he never spoke of the | 16 |
| personal disability which resulted from that unselfish act; and
| 17 |
| WHEREAS, After the war, Claude attended The Chicago College | 18 |
| of Chiropody and Pedic Surgery (now Scholl College of Podiatric | 19 |
| Medicine), earning his degree as a foot doctor in 1949; always | 20 |
| active and committed, he served his community in many | 21 |
| leadership roles over the years including, among others, | 22 |
| membership on the School Board and Housing Authority |

| Commissioner; and | 2 |
| WHEREAS, Claude Hiles practiced podiatry for 40 years, with | 3 |
| offices in Granite City, Alton, East St. Louis, and on The Hill | 4 |
| in St. Louis; he was credited as being the founding father of | 5 |
| podiatry in the St. Louis area, having trained numerous foot | 6 |
| surgeons during the 1970s; he founded the first surgical | 7 |
| residency program in the Metro-St. Louis region at Lindell | 8 |
| Hospital and was also the first podiatrist on staff at Anderson | 9 |
| Hospital in Maryville, where he chaired the podiatry committee | 10 |
| for a number of years; and | 11 |
| WHEREAS, Claude Hiles was named a Fellow of the | 12 |
| International College of Foot Surgeons for his success and | 13 |
| leadership in surgery; he was on the Board of Trustees of the | 14 |
| Big Ten Club of Podiatry which also recognized him as Man of | 15 |
| the Year for continuous outstanding service to the profession; | 16 |
| and
| 17 |
| WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey; he | 18 |
| was also preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Gladys | 19 |
| Gilly and Agnes Bowler; and his brother, Joseph Hiles; and
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, He is survived by his two sons, David and Tony | 21 |
| Hiles; his two daughters, Aleana Hiles and Leann Kinscherff; | 22 |
| one son-in-law, David Kinscherff; one daughter-in-law, Donna |

| Hiles; one foster son, Bob Michaels; four grandsons, John and | 2 |
| Matthew Kinscherff, and Chad and Clayton Hiles; two | 3 |
| granddaughters, Kristin Kinscherff and Kristin Best; one | 4 |
| great-granddaughter, Haley Kinscherff; and several dear nieces | 5 |
| and nephews and many friends; therefore, be it
| 6 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL | 7 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | 8 |
| his family and friends, the passing of Dr. Claude Hiles; and be | 9 |
| it further
| 10 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 11 |
| presented to the family of Dr. Claude Hiles as a symbol of our | 12 |
| sincere sympathy.
