| SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | 3 |
| learned with sadness of the death of Lena "Grandma Moose" Sly, | 4 |
| age 103, of Wood River, on October 12, 2005; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, She was born in Jasper County on October 25, 1901, | 6 |
| to John and Etta (Kingery) Elliot; and
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, As a member of the Retail Clerks Union, she was a | 8 |
| seamstress for Miller's Dress Store and Illinois Cleaners for | 9 |
| many years; and
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, She was a member of the Women of the Moose for | 11 |
| more than 50 years and also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of | 12 |
| the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, The Wood River Moose Lodge 1349 played a prominent | 14 |
| part in her life and it was there that she was affectionately | 15 |
| known to everyone as "Grandma Moose"; Grandma was a fixture at | 16 |
| the Moose Lodge, a waitress extraordinaire, and a person | 17 |
| described by her friends and customers as friendly, bubbly, | 18 |
| inspiring, and spirited; and
| 19 |
| WHEREAS, One friend noted that people came to the Moose | 20 |
| Lodge just to see Grandma; her friend remembered that Grandma | 21 |
| would ask about a customer's family and remember those details, | 22 |
| whenever the customer returned; also, "Grandma could tell you | 23 |
| things about your family, that you didn't know."; and | 24 |
| WHEREAS, Amazingly, Grandma continued to cook, work in the | 25 |
| kitchen, and serve customers at the Lodge, until her declining | 26 |
| vision at the age of 101 compelled her to cease working as a | 27 |
| waitress; and | 28 |
| WHEREAS, While Grandma will be sorely missed by her family |

| and her many friends at Lodge 1349, her spirit will live on in | 2 |
| family stories and at the Moose Lodge in the tales and laughs | 3 |
| her memory will evoke; and
| 4 |
| WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her parents, two | 5 |
| brothers, Lester and Omar Elliott; a son and daughter-in-law, | 6 |
| Johnie and Eloise Sly; and a great-granddaughter, Hillary Lynn | 7 |
| Ross; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Lena "Grandma Moose" Sly will be | 9 |
| felt by all who knew and loved her, especially her children and | 10 |
| their spouses,
Lavon and Clinton Cook, Eileen and Lee Klunk, | 11 |
| Betty and Lynn Unterbrink, and Harold and Pat Sly; her five | 12 |
| siblings and their spouses, Jessie Gephart, Denver and Eleanor | 13 |
| Elliott, Myrna Alcoke, Elbert Elliott, and Delbert and Helen | 14 |
| Elliot; her grandchildren and their spouses, Tommy Sly, Danny | 15 |
| and Donna Sly, Julie and Mike Hopkins, Jim and Christee Cook, | 16 |
| Carol Cook, Susie and Ken Brigman, Nancy Stephens, Gail and Ron | 17 |
| Deichmann, Marsha and Brian Brueggemann, Linda and Jim Nelson, | 18 |
| Cathy and Robert Bablok, and Tammy Long; her thirty-three | 19 |
| great-grandchildren; her seven great-great-grandchildren; and | 20 |
| many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
| 21 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL | 22 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
| 23 |
| Lena "Grandma Moose" Sly and we extend our sincerest | 24 |
| condolences to her
family, friends, and community; and be it | 25 |
| further
| 26 |
| RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | 27 |
| presented to her family and to Moose Lodge 1349 as an | 28 |
| expression of our deepest sympathy.
