| 2 | | WHEREAS, Governors State University was established on | 3 | | July 17, 1969 by Governor Richard B. Ogilvie as a bold, new | 4 | | model for transforming lives through education in Chicago's | 5 | | South Suburbs; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Governors State University was initially known as | 7 | | the "university without walls" to reflect its unlimited | 8 | | potential and to commemorate opening the same week the United | 9 | | States sent Apollo 11 to the moon; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Over two decades, Governors State University | 11 | | transformed itself into a university with classrooms, | 12 | | structured programs, and letter grades while staying true to | 13 | | its version of serving nontraditional students; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Governors State University has since created a | 15 | | national model for serving adults and returning adults whose | 16 | | contributions as graduates and working professionals stimulate | 17 | | local, regional, and global communities; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Between 2011 and 2014, Governors State University | 19 | | reinvented itself once again with the creation of an | 20 | | award-winning, structured, four-year undergraduate program, | 21 | | the admittance of freshmen, the development of the Dual Degree |

| 1 | | Program (DDP), a nationally-recognized partnership with 17 | 2 | | Chicagoland community colleges, the building of the | 3 | | University's first living-learning community, Prairie Place, | 4 | | and the addition of NAIA intercollegiate athletics; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, As the only public university in the area south of | 6 | | Chicago, Governors State University is an educational and | 7 | | cultural destination and serves nearly 5,000 undergraduate and | 8 | | graduate students who reflect the nation's new student | 9 | | majority, first-generation students, students of color, | 10 | | adults, and military veterans; therefore, be it
| 11 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 12 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 13 | | we declare July 17, 2019 as Governors State University Day in | 14 | | the State of Illinois and commend the University on 50 years of | 15 | | leadership, innovation, education, and excellence in the | 16 | | Chicagoland region, the nation, and the world; and be it | 17 | | further
| 18 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 19 | | presented to Governors State University as an expression of our | 20 | | esteem and respect.
