| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the Robert Lindblom Math | 4 | | and Science Academy on the occasion of its Centennial | 5 | | Anniversary; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Lindblom, which opened on September 2, 1919, is | 7 | | one of nine selective-enrollment high schools in the Chicago | 8 | | Public Schools system and draws the best students from all | 9 | | areas of the city; the academy was originally designated for | 10 | | students who intended to enter vocations in the industrial and | 11 | | skilled trades; initially, the Academy served a population with | 12 | | a high number of European immigrants and emphasized the | 13 | | importance of education in assimilation and advancement; as the | 14 | | number of industrial jobs declined following World War I and | 15 | | the job market changed, the Academy's curricula was changed to | 16 | | emphasize preparation for college, so students were able to | 17 | | obtain degrees needed for the changing markets; in 2005, the | 18 | | academy reopened under new leadership; it was granted landmark | 19 | | status by the City of Chicago on June 9, 2010; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Today, Lindblom is an inclusive, challenging, and | 21 | | supportive community that empowers students to become | 22 | | compassionate leaders who understand, engage, and impact the | 23 | | world; the academy offers a demanding college preparatory |

| 1 | | curriculum, where all core courses are honors and Advanced | 2 | | Placement; students are offered opportunities beyond the | 3 | | traditional coursework, including unique programs in critical | 4 | | world languages, math, and science; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Lindblom's Biotechnology Center of Excellence, | 6 | | run in partnership with Baxter International and the office of | 7 | | STEM Education Partnerships at Northwestern University, | 8 | | provides the anchor for the deep STEM program; the Baxter | 9 | | initiative builds upon the academy's established Biotechnology | 10 | | program by connecting students' classroom studies to | 11 | | real-world experiences and trains other Chicago Public School | 12 | | teachers to implement Biotechnology programs in their schools; | 13 | | and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Lindblom continues to prepare students for higher | 15 | | education through its forward-looking Career Technical | 16 | | Education programs, including computer science and | 17 | | pre-engineering; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Lindblom will commemorate its Centennial | 19 | | Anniversary with Nest Fest, which will be held on August 31, | 20 | | 2019 and feature music, fun, camaraderie, and collegiality | 21 | | shared by many generations of Lindblom Eagles; therefore, be it

| 1 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 2 | | we congratulate the Robert Lindblom Math and Science Academy on | 3 | | the occasion of its Centennial Anniversary and wish the | 4 | | faculty, staff, and students many more successful years; and be | 5 | | it further
| 6 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 7 | | presented to the Robert Lindblom Math and Science Academy as an | 8 | | expression of our esteem and respect.
