| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | 3 | | to learn of the death of Douglas McBryde "Doug" Kinney of Lake | 4 | | Forest, who passed away on June 16, 2023; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Doug Kinney was born to Ansel and Elinor | 6 | | (Woodward) Kinney on May 10, 1931; he graduated from Groton | 7 | | School in 1948 and Harvard College in 1952; he served as a | 8 | | lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War; he then | 9 | | graduated from Harvard Business School in 1956, where he was a | 10 | | Baker Scholar; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Doug Kinney returned to Chicago to work for the | 12 | | family company, Intermatic, and he led the company for 53 | 13 | | years of its 132-year history of being family-owned; during | 14 | | his tenure, Intermatic prospered despite facing many market | 15 | | challenges; in 1974, he founded Palmer Capital Corporation, a | 16 | | company focused on renewable energy; he started the first | 17 | | landfill gas-to-electric project in the country, which has | 18 | | since completed over $2.65 billion in energy financing; he | 19 | | also served on the board of Trek Bicycle since its founding in | 20 | | 1976; and
| 21 | | WHEREAS, After his 70th birthday, Doug Kinney put his | 22 | | efforts into backing promising research into causes and |

| 1 | | possible cures for progressive neurodegenerative brain | 2 | | diseases; with two like-minded friends, he laid the groundwork | 3 | | for the Brain Chemistry Labs, a not-for-profit research | 4 | | institute in Jackson, Wyoming, which has since discovered new | 5 | | treatments for ALS and Alzheimer's disease that are in | 6 | | clinical trials and a new drug to treat Parkinson's disease | 7 | | that is in preclinical development; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Following Florida's devastating outbreak of red | 9 | | tide and blue green algae in 1991, Doug Kinney created the | 10 | | Clean Okeechobee Waters Foundation, an organization dedicated | 11 | | to increasing awareness of the health risks of exposure to | 12 | | harmful algae blooms and calling for rigorous enforcement of | 13 | | environmental regulations by those responsible for protecting | 14 | | public health; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Doug Kinney also devoted time to the National | 16 | | Tropical Botanical Garden located in Hawaii and Florida, | 17 | | acting as chairman for 13 years; through his generosity and | 18 | | leadership, he was instrumental in establishing endowments for | 19 | | scientific research and the dedication of the McBryde Garden | 20 | | in Hawaii; he also worked to establish the Breadfruit | 21 | | Institute to advance the impact of breadfruit and its use to | 22 | | nourish the tropical world; and
| 23 | | WHEREAS, Doug Kinney was known to many as "Growlie"; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Doug Kinney is survived by his wife, Elizabeth | 2 | | (Hummel) Kinney; his children, Ansel D. Kinney, Douglas M. | 3 | | (Kimberly) Kinney Jr., Elisabeth S.K. Robinson, Martha K. | 4 | | Perry, and Hilary S. Kinney; his stepchildren, Elizabeth E. | 5 | | Smyth and John E. (Jenifer) Smyth; his sisters, Barbara K. | 6 | | (the late Cyrus B. III) Sweet and Joan K. (Lynn) Seppala; his | 7 | | grandchildren, Samuel C. Kinney, Elizabeth S. Kinney, Douglas | 8 | | M. (Allison) Kinney III, Alexandra K. (Jack) McBride, Marta R. | 9 | | (Scott) Day, Eli J. Robinson, Duncan M. Robinson, Alexander M. | 10 | | Perry, Lucas M. Perry, Lyda E. Hanson, Spencer S. Hanson, | 11 | | Wyatt M. Hanson, Lily E. Smyth, and Alexander W. Smyth; and his | 12 | | great-granddaughters, Gemma S. Day and Georgia A. McBride; | 13 | | therefore, be it
| 14 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | 15 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 16 | | Douglas McBryde "Doug" Kinney and extend our sincere | 17 | | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | 18 | | him; and be it further
| 19 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 20 | | presented to the family of Doug Kinney as an expression of our | 21 | | deepest sympathy.
