| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate our friend and former | 4 | | colleague, John Thomas Doody, Jr., on the occasion of his | 5 | | retirement as a Cook County Circuit Court Judge after many | 6 | | years of service; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, John Doody, Jr. was born on January 15, 1945, in | 8 | | Evergreen Park, and moved to Homewood shortly thereafter; he | 9 | | graduated from Mendel Catholic High School in 1962 and earned | 10 | | his bachelor's degree from Procopius College (now Benedictine | 11 | | University) in 1966; he pursued his graduate degree studies in | 12 | | political science at Illinois State University from 1966 to | 13 | | 1968 and at John Marshall Law School in 1974 and worked on his | 14 | | post-graduate program in political justice studies at | 15 | | Governors State University from 1998 to 2002; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, John Doody, Jr. and his wife, Janet, are from | 17 | | Homewood; they are the parents of Maureen and John and the | 18 | | grandparents of 2 boys and 2 girls; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, John Doody, Jr. was a practicing attorney from | 20 | | 1974 to 2002, giving free legal advice for many years to senior | 21 | | citizens through a program at the Irwin Center in Homewood; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, John Doody, Jr. has served with distinction in all | 2 | | three branches of government, having been elected to serve in | 3 | | his village as president, as well as his township and the | 4 | | Illinois General Assembly; he has also served his community | 5 | | through his church (Auxiliary Minister of Communion and | 6 | | Minister of Care at his parish church, St. Joseph's), civic and | 7 | | advocacy groups, veterans' organizations, and youth groups; | 8 | | and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, John Doody, Jr. served as a Bloom Township Trustee | 10 | | (1981-1983), a member of the Village of Homewood Plan | 11 | | Commission (1979-1981), a Village of Homewood Trustee | 12 | | (1983-1991), the President of the Village of Homewood | 13 | | (1991-1995), State Representative of the Illinois 37th | 14 | | District (1995-1997), and Trustee of the Homewood Public | 15 | | Library District (1997-2002); and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, John Doody, Jr. has served as a board member of | 17 | | the Illinois Judges Association and a Board Member of the John | 18 | | Marshall Law School Alumni Association; he has been a speaker | 19 | | or panelist at numerous DUI seminars (2004-2006) and has been a | 20 | | faculty member to train judges through the Administrative | 21 | | Office of the Illinois Courts; he also co-edited the Chicago | 22 | | Traffic Center Bench Book for Judges; and | 23 | | WHEREAS, John Doody, Jr. volunteered to serve his country |

| 1 | | in the United States Army and is a Vietnam veteran (1968-1970); | 2 | | he has also been active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars in the | 3 | | Homewood Wally Burns Post 8077 as a Past Commander, Past Senior | 4 | | Vice Commander, Junior Vice Commander, Adjutant, Judge | 5 | | Advocate, the 16th District VFW Past Commander, and Past Judge | 6 | | Advocate of the State of Illinois VFW; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, John Doody, Jr. has been active in both Homewood | 8 | | baseball and softball as a sponsor, an umpire, and assistant | 9 | | coach, as well as an assistant basketball coach for both boys | 10 | | and girls; he served as director of the South Cook County Girl | 11 | | Scouts Council; he has served in various leadership positions | 12 | | of the Rotary Club of Homewood; he was also a former director | 13 | | of the South Region Visual Arts Guild, a past Chair of the | 14 | | Board of Trustees of Seton Academy, a past Director of the | 15 | | Mercy Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, and a member of | 16 | | the Marian Council #3761 Knights of Columbus in Homewood; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, John Doody, Jr. has additionally served his | 18 | | community through his good work with Happiday Centers (South | 19 | | Star Services), Haymarket House, Homewood Chamber of Commerce, | 20 | | Abby Foundation, Homewood-Flossmoor League of Women Voters, | 21 | | Crisis Center for South Suburbia, Homewood-Flossmoor-Glenwood | 22 | | Jaycees, and the Homewood Historical Society; and | 23 | | WHEREAS, John Doody, Jr. was inaugurated to the Village of |

| 1 | | Homewood Hall of Fame in 2007; he has also been honored with | 2 | | awards from many organizations, including the Dianne G. Masters | 3 | | Award from the Crisis Center for South Suburbia, the Homewood | 4 | | Police Department Appreciation Award, the Homewood-Flossmoor | 5 | | Lion's Club Distinguished Service Award, the Illinois | 6 | | Benedictine College (Benedictine University) Bronze Award, and | 7 | | awards from the Illinois and Northeast Region Jaycees; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, John Doody, Jr. served as a Cook County Circuit | 9 | | Court Judge from 2002 until his retirement this year; he served | 10 | | with distinction in both traffic court and criminal court; and | 11 | | WHEREAS, In an effort to better serve the public, John | 12 | | Doody, Jr. produced educational cable television programs on | 13 | | traffic law violations and their consequences; he also learned | 14 | | Spanish to communicate with people who came before him without | 15 | | needing an interpreter; therefore, be it
| 16 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 17 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 18 | | we congratulate our former colleague, John Thomas Doody, Jr., | 19 | | on the occasion of his retirement from the bench, and wish him | 20 | | many more years of health, happiness, and good service to his | 21 | | community; and be it further
