1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of
3 Illinois learned with regret of the death of John Daniels on
4 Saturday, August 16, 2003; and
5 WHEREAS, Mr. Daniels was born in Chicago to Walter and
6 Beatrice Daniels on April 29, 1932; he was raised in the
7 Morgan Park community where he and his family attended Beth
8 Eden Baptist Church; he was known as "Redbone" to his family
9 and enjoyed participating in track and field activities; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Daniels attended John D. Shoop Elementary
11 School and Chicago Vocational and Morgan Park High Schools;
12 while at Morgan Park, he had the distinction of being the
13 first African-American quarterback for "Empheni" Mustangs; he
14 went on to Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana,
15 where he completed 2 years of studies; he then pursued his
16 love of baseball as an "Ace Curve Ball Pitcher" for the
17 Harlem Globetrotters Minor League Baseball Franchise Team,
18 the St. Louis Browns; and
19 WHEREAS, Mr. Daniels valiantly served his country in the
20 U.S. Army for 2 years; after his honorable discharge, he
21 married Sarah Louise Reddick on August 21, 1955; and
22 WHEREAS, Mr. Daniels began his political career as a
23 precinct captain with the sponsorship of Weldon "D" Ray in
24 July of 1955; he worked with John J. Duffy and Gerald
25 Sullivan in the Construction, Maintenance, and Operations
26 Department under Cook County Commissioner George Dunne and
27 later under Richard Phelan; he continued his employment as
28 Director of Financial Control until his retirement in 1993;
29 and
30 WHEREAS, The passing of Mr. Daniels has been deeply felt
31 by many, especially his wife, Sarah; his daughter, Diane

1 (William) Fulton; his grandsons, Blake and Cameron; his
2 brother, Floyd (Jeanette) Daniels; his sisters, Paula Evans
3 and Gwendolyn Traylor; his brothers-in-law, Albert (Joanne)
4 Reddick, Welton (Ronita) Reddick, Raymond (Sybil) Reddick),
5 and Melvin (Gloria) Reddick; his aunt, Carrie Colbert; his
6 uncle, Robert Danielly; his nieces and nephews, Jimmy (Gail),
7 Walter, Billy (Eunice), Paul, Arthur (Joyce), Tony, Darryl,
8 Crystal, Larry, Carla (Varsai) Evans, and Ingrid Saunders;
9 his cousins, Norman, Gerald, Louise, Ann, Betty, Rudolph, and
10 Calvin; his extended family, the Daniellys, Callaways,
11 Phillips, Murchisons, Arterbridges, Mitchells, Fladgers,
12 Reddicks, Robertsons, Culleys, Woltzs, Hardys, McMullens,
13 Fultons; and many other relatives and friends; therefore, be
14 it
15 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
16 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing
17 of John Daniels and extend our sincerest condolences to his
18 friends, family, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
19 further
20 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21 presented to the family of John Daniels as an expression of
22 our deepest sympathy during their time of bereavement.
