| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Dr. Donald Chatman; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Chatman was born in New Orleans to Dr. | 5 | | Aristotle
Lorenzo and Eulacie S. Chatman in 1934 and raised in | 6 | | Baton Rouge; he attended the Mount Herman School in Mount | 7 | | Herman, Massachusetts and then earned his Bachelor of Arts in | 8 | | Physical Anthropology from Harvard University; he earned his | 9 | | medical degree at the Meharry
Medical College of Medicine in | 10 | | Nashville and opened a practice in general
medicine in Lake | 11 | | Charles, Louisiana; he then served as a captain in the United | 12 | | States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1972; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Chatman moved to Chicago to complete a | 14 | | residency in OB-GYN at Michael Reese Hospital; in 1969, he | 15 | | became one of the first African American physicians to serve as | 16 | | an
attending physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the | 17 | | Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center
in Chicago, serving | 18 | | as Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics | 19 | | and Gynecology on
two separate occasions; he served as an | 20 | | attending physician at South Chicago
Community Hospital, | 21 | | Provident Hospital, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and
Mercy | 22 | | Hospital and Medical Center; at the time of his retirement, he | 23 | | was an
associate professor of Clinical Obstetrics and |

| 1 | | Gynecology at the Northwestern Feinberg School
of Medicine; and
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Chatman lectured both
nationally and | 3 | | internationally at organizations including the American | 4 | | Association of
Gynecologic Laparoscopists, the International | 5 | | Society for Gynecologic Laparoscopy, and the
World Congress of | 6 | | Gynecologic Endoscopy; he was featured on the Oprah Winfrey
| 7 | | Show and Good Morning America; he served as the first African | 8 | | American president, vice-president, treasurer,
and secretary | 9 | | of the Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL); he | 10 | | also served as
a member of the board of directors and as | 11 | | associate editor of the journal of the
same organization; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Most recently, Dr. Chatman was writing a book | 13 | | memorializing the
extraordinary journey of his father, | 14 | | escaping sharecropping in Louisiana at the age of 14 to
pursue | 15 | | his education; and | 16 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Chatman loved spending time with his family | 17 | | and
friends, reading and writing, playing golf, and traveling | 18 | | the world with his wife and
friends; and | 19 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Chatman was a member of the
physician club, | 20 | | the Saracens, and the social club, the Chicagoans; he and his | 21 | | wife frequently
supported local causes and organizations, | 22 | | attending social events and fundraisers; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Chatman was preceded in death by his parents | 2 | | and two brothers; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Chatman is survived
by his wife, Linda C.; his | 4 | | daughters, Lynn Chatman Todman (Michael) and Eleanor
Louise | 5 | | Chatman; his son, Eric Leveritt Chatman (Angela); his | 6 | | mother-in-law, Lois
Wilson; his father-in-law, James Wilson; | 7 | | his stepsons, Carl R. and Bruce E. Golden (Marie); his cousin, | 8 | | Fay Green; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and | 9 | | numerous extended family
members and friends; therefore, be it
| 10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | 11 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 12 | | Dr. Donald Chatman, and extend our sincere condolences to his | 13 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 14 | | further
| 15 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 16 | | presented to the family of Dr. Chatman as an expression of our | 17 | | deepest sympathy.
