| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Carl Walton Sr. of Chicago | 4 | | on the occasion of his 100th birthday; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Carl Walton Sr. was born in Yazoo City, | 6 | | Mississippi on October 8, 1918; he received his formal | 7 | | education from the Piney Woods Institute in Piney Woods, | 8 | | Mississippi; he grew up selling food to support his family and | 9 | | later worked for the Gamer Seed
Company in Yazoo City, where he | 10 | | sold and delivered garden materials; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Carl Walton Sr. and his siblings formed a family | 12 | | singing group, The Walton Brothers, and were known for their | 13 | | harmonious gospel quartet; Sam Cooke sang with them for a short | 14 | | period
of time; The Walton Brothers traveled around the country | 15 | | performing their music in various places including Chicago, and | 16 | | the states of Mississippi,
Missouri, and Indiana; the group was | 17 | | the first to sing on Isabel Joseph Johnson's WHFC Sunday
| 18 | | morning broadcast, currently known as WVON; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Carl Walton Sr. migrated to Chicago, where he | 20 | | enrolled in a plumbing training
program; he later worked as a | 21 | | box handler and courier for Erie
Lackawanna Railroad, which | 22 | | became Conrail and then Amtrak; he retired after
30 years of |

| 1 | | dedicated service; and | 2 | | WHEREAS, Carl Walton Sr. had four children from a previous | 3 | | marriage, May Helen, Carlos, Felicia, and Carl
Walton Jr.; he | 4 | | married his current wife, Geralene Walton, in 1973 and to this | 5 | | union twin daughters were
born, Barbara and Carol; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, Carl Walton Sr.'s hobbies included fishing and | 7 | | gardening; he often caught loads of fish and brought them home | 8 | | to share with his neighbors and friends; he was also an avid | 9 | | gardener and his yard was well known in the neighborhood, | 10 | | showcasing his
grapevines, apple trees, pear trees, tomatoes, | 11 | | bell peppers, and strawberry patches just to name a few; and | 12 | | WHEREAS, Carl Walton Sr. is an active member of the First | 13 | | Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev.
Brasfield; he can | 14 | | be seen every Sunday in the area where the men sit, right | 15 | | behind the deacons; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, At 100 years young, Carl Walton Sr. enjoys | 17 | | laughing, joking, and talking with his children,
| 18 | | grandchildren, and his many friends; therefore, be it
| 19 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 20 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 21 | | congratulate Carl Walton Sr. on his 100th birthday, and we wish |
