| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, | 3 | | extending from Wood River, Illinois to the mouth of the | 4 | | Columbia River in
Oregon and Washington, was established by the | 5 | | United States Congress in 1978; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, The Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008 | 7 | | directed the National Park
Service to conduct a Special | 8 | | Resources Study to assess the suitability and feasibility of | 9 | | extending
the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail by | 10 | | including the Eastern Legacy sites, the historic
routes and | 11 | | sites in the East that were vital to the preparation and | 12 | | planning of the Lewis and Clark
"Corps of Discovery" | 13 | | expedition; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Extending the Lewis and Clark National Historic | 15 | | Trail eastward fulfills the
objectives of the National Trails | 16 | | System, established in 1968 to provide for the ever-increasing
| 17 | | outdoor recreation needs of an expanding population and to | 18 | | promote the preservation of, public
access to, travel within, | 19 | | and enjoyment and appreciation of open-air, outdoor areas, and | 20 | | historic
resources of the nation; and | 21 | | WHEREAS, William Clark, co-commander of the "Corps of | 22 | | Discovery" expedition, along
with 10 other members of the |

| 1 | | expedition, were Kentuckians who were involved in every
pivotal | 2 | | event during the "Corps of Discovery" expedition; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, other members of | 4 | | the
expedition, and tribal people under their care traveled | 5 | | through Kentucky after exploring the West; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Kentucky newspapers were the first newspapers in | 7 | | the country to publish
reports of the success of the "Corps of | 8 | | Discovery" expedition as well as the first reports of the death | 9 | | of
Governor Meriwether Lewis; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Tourism is a major component of Kentucky's economy | 11 | | and the addition of 52
counties in Kentucky to the Lewis and | 12 | | Clark National Historic Trail would greatly benefit the
tourism | 13 | | industry and the overall economy of the Commonwealth; | 14 | | therefore, be it
| 15 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 16 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 17 | | urge the National Park Service to include the Eastern Legacy | 18 | | Sites, which include 52 Kentucky counties, in the Lewis and | 19 | | Clark National Historic Trail; and be it further
| 20 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 21 | | presented to National Park Service Director,
Jon Jarvis.
