HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate International Association
4of Heat & Frost Insulators & Allied Workers #1 (Pipe Coverers'
5Union No. 1) on the occasion of its 125th anniversary; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1 has been a leader in
7the mechanical insulation industry for over a century, with
8the organization currently representing 350 certified members
9in western Illinois and eastern Missouri who are trained in
10the industry's latest insulation and safety standards; the
11organization also has 33 signatory contractors, covering 37
12counties in Illinois and 36 counties in Missouri, who provide
13the safest and most productive workforce in the bi-state area;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, On December 20, 1898, Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1
16was first organized in St. Louis, Missouri in response to
17insulation workers enduring low wages, poor working
18conditions, and no job security; in the subsequent years, the
19organization effectively served the purpose for which it was
20founded, improving the future of its members, thus providing
21inspiration for pipe coverers in other parts of the country;

1    WHEREAS, Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1 held its inaugural
2national convention in St. Louis on July 7, 1903, which was
3attended by delegates from local unions in Cleveland, Ohio,
4Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Chicago, Illinois, Boston,
5Massachusetts, San Francisco, California, and Detroit,
6Michigan and resulted in the adoption of the organization's
7constitution and bylaws; and
 
8    WHEREAS, At its annual convention in 1904, Pipe Coverers'
9Union No. 1 adopted the official name of the National
10Association of Heat, Frost and General Insulators and Asbestos
11Workers of America; the organization also received recognition
12as a national union upon obtaining an official charter from
13the American Federation of Labor on September 22, 1904; and
 
14    WHEREAS, In 1910, Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1 was joined by
15several Canadian local unions, leading the organization to
16apply for a new charter as an international union and to change
17its name to the International Association of Heat & Frost
18Insulators and Asbestos Workers; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Today, Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1 goes by the
20official title of International Association of Heat & Frost
21Insulators & Allied Workers #1; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Through endurance and relentless pursuit for a

1higher standard of living and better benefits and conditions,
2Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1 has endured and overcome a great
3deal in its 125-year history, permitting today's members to
4enjoy a safe workplace, an excellent hourly wage, superior
5health and welfare benefits, and a generous pension;
6therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we congratulate International Association of Heat & Frost
10Insulators & Allied Workers #1 (Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1) on
11its 125th anniversary; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1 as an expression of our
14esteem and respect.
