| 1 | | AN ACT concerning transportation. | 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, | 3 | | represented in the General Assembly: | 4 | | Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding | 5 | | Sections 3-699.23 and 3-699.24 as follows: | 6 | | (625 ILCS 5/3-699.23 new) | 7 | | Sec. 3-699.23. Defense Superior Service license plates. | 8 | | (a) The Secretary, upon receipt of an application made in | 9 | | the form prescribed by the Secretary, may issue special | 10 | | registration plates designated as Defense Superior Service | 11 | | license plates to recipients awarded the Defense Superior | 12 | | Service Medal by a branch of the armed forces of the United | 13 | | States who reside in this State. The special plates issued | 14 | | pursuant to this Section shall be affixed only to passenger | 15 | | vehicles of the first division, motorcycles, and motor | 16 | | vehicles of the second division weighing not more than 8,000 | 17 | | pounds. The Secretary may allow the plates to be issued as | 18 | | vanity or personalized plates in accordance with Section | 19 | | 3-405.1 of this Code. The Secretary shall make a version of the | 20 | | special registration plates authorized under this Section in a | 21 | | form appropriate for motorcycles. | 22 | | (b) The plates shall display the Defense Superior Service | 23 | | Medal. In all other respects, the design and color of the |

| 1 | | plates shall be wholly within the discretion of the Secretary. | 2 | | Appropriate documentation, as determined by the Secretary, | 3 | | shall accompany each application. The Secretary may, in his or | 4 | | her discretion, allow the plates to be issued as vanity plates | 5 | | or personalized in accordance with Section 3-405.1 of this | 6 | | Code. The plates are not required to designate "Land of | 7 | | Lincoln", as prescribed in subsection (b) of Section 3-412 of | 8 | | this Code. The Secretary shall prescribe the eligibility | 9 | | requirements and, in his or her discretion, shall approve and | 10 | | prescribe stickers or decals as provided under Section 3-412. | 11 | | No registration fee, including the fees established under | 12 | | Section 3-806 of this Code, shall be charged for the issuance | 13 | | or renewal of any plates issued under this Section. | 14 | | (625 ILCS 5/3-699.24 new) | 15 | | Sec. 3-699.24.
