SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Lester La Verne Wherry of Rock Island, who passed away on August 13, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Lester Wherry was born in Eliza Township in Mercer County to Alden and Lila (Loving) Wherry on May 31, 1932; he graduated from Joy High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War; he married Carley Fisher at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa on June 14, 1958; and

WHEREAS, After his service, Lester Wherry worked at Wherry's Tavern in Joy; he then worked for Oscar Mayer in Davenport for 33 years, retiring in 1993; and

WHEREAS, Lester Wherry's memberships included Milan American Legion Post No. 569, Galesburg Moose, and the Mississippi Valley Country and Western Music Association; he enjoyed traveling, deer hunting, music, dancing, and hound dogs, especially "Flying Lady"; and

WHEREAS, Lester Wherry was preceded in death by his wife, Carley; his sons, Dana and Douglas Wherry; his sister and brother-in-law, Vada and Aldus Gridley; and his parents; and

WHEREAS, Lester Wherry is survived by his son, David (Mariann) Wherry; his niece, Linda (Tom) Williams; his great-nieces, Amanda Williams and Tarrah Smith; his great-great nieces, Lydia and Emily Skelton; and his special friend, Joy Norton and her family; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Lester La Verne Wherry and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Lester Wherry as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
