AMENDMENT TO SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 43

2    AMENDMENT NO. ___. Amend Senate Joint Resolution 43 by
3replacing everything after the heading with the following:
 
4    "WHEREAS, The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common
5sexually transmitted virus in the United States; nearly 14
6million people become infected each year; and
 
7    WHEREAS, HPV causes approximately 33,700 cases of
8HPV-associated cancers each year, including cervical, anal,
9and oropharyngeal cancers; and
 
10    WHEREAS, 9-valent HPV vaccine protects against nine types
11of HPV infection; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The HPV vaccine was tested before being licensed
13by the Food and Drug Administration and continues to be
14monitored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and

1the Food and Drug Administration; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The most common side effects are mild and include
3pain, redness, or swelling in the arm where the shot is given;
4dizziness, fainting, nausea, and headaches can also occur; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the
6Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommend
7two doses of HPV vaccine for males and females ages 11-12; the
8vaccine is approved for men and women through age 45; and
 
9    WHEREAS, In Illinois, only 50 percent of males and females
10ages 13-17 years were up to date on HPV vaccination in 2017;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
14CONCURRING HEREIN, that we encourage adolescents in Illinois to
15receive the HPV vaccine to protect themselves against HPV
16infection and HPV-related cancers."
