AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 1572

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 1572 by replacing
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 5. The Animal Control Act is amended by adding
5Section 9.1 as follows:
 
6    (510 ILCS 5/9.1 new)
7    Sec. 9.1. Reporting of stray dogs.
8    (a) In this Section, "hold" means to afford lodging.
9    (b) Any individual who decides to hold in his or her
10possession any lost or stray dog of which he or she is not the
11owner shall, within 48 hours of taking possession of the lost
12or stray dog shall:
13        (1) report to the police station and animal control
14    facility nearest to the location where the dog was found
15    all relevant information, including, but not limited to,
16    where the dog was found, the name or any other information

1    or identification tags found on the dog, tattoos, color,
2    age, size, and gender of the animal and the individual's
3    name and address;
4        (2) arrange for the dog to be scanned for the presence
5    of a microchip by an animal control facility, animal
6    shelter, veterinarian's office, or any other establishment
7    with a working microchip scanner. The animal control
8    facility, animal shelter, or veterinarian's office must
9    maintain a record of scanning the dog for a microchip; and
10        (3) make every reasonable attempt to contact the owner
11    as soon as possible and relinquish the dog to the owner
12    within a reasonable amount of time after making contact.
13    (c) The failure to report a lost or stray dog within 48
14hours of taking possession of the dog shall be punished by a
15fine of no less than $50 and no more than $500.".
