AMENDMENT TO HOUSE BILL 3638

AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 3638, AS AMENDED, by replacing everything after the enacting clause with the following:

"Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section 2-3.176 as follows:

(105 ILCS 5/2-3.176 new)

Sec. 2-3.176. Vietnamese and Laotian American refugees and the Cambodian genocide; resources.

(a) The State Board of Education must post on its website resources that may be used by school districts to support instruction in the Vietnamese and Laotian American refugee experience that include, but are not limited to, the fall of Saigon in 1975. The resources may include writings and other media that represent all perspectives of the Vietnamese and Laotian refugee experience, including oral testimony by survivors, rescuers, and liberators of the Vietnam War, including Vietnamese and Laotian American refugees, Vietnamese boat people, and members of the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces. The resources must be gathered by the State Board in consultation with Vietnamese and Laotian American cultural centers and community groups.

(b) The State Board of Education must post on its website resources that may be used by school districts to support instruction in the Cambodian genocide. The resources may include writings and other media that represent all perspectives of the Cambodian genocide, including oral testimony by survivors. The resources must be gathered by the State Board in consultation with Cambodian American cultural centers and community groups.

Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon becoming law.".
