HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, According to the tax documents of the Humane
3Society of the United States, as well as other independent
4analyses, the national organization renowned for animal rights
5donated less than one percent of their $132 million budget to
6help care for actual animals in 2016; and
 
7    WHEREAS, This information differs from the impression
8people are given by their late-night commercials, which depict
9animals in distress and in need of help; the end result is that
10people who want to help innocent animals are baited into
11donating their money, which in turn is used to help pay for the
12six-to-seven figure salaries of executives, and the frivolous
13law suits of local pet stores, zoos, and hardworking farmers;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, These financial revelations about the Humane
16Society of the United States, along with the allegations of
17sexual assault against their former CEO, bring into question
18whether the organization is truly living up to its mission,
19advocating for the rights of animals; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Members of this chamber should be encouraging the
21residents of Illinois to research other local humane societies
22that are completely unaffiliated with the National

1organization; residents of Illinois will find that these
2independent humane societies do not receive many donations and
3rely primarily on dedicated volunteers to care for the animals;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, Unlike the Humane Society of the United States,
6local independent humane societies prioritize assisting
7animals in our own communities, especially those that are
8abused and neglected, and ending animal abuse; these local
9organizations are where we, as residents of Illinois, should
10donate our time and money; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
13admonish the Humane Society of the United States for their
14disrespectful work culture and lack of commitment to supporting
15animals; furthermore, we ask anyone who supports animal rights
16causes to support their local independent humane society
17instead.
