HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Warren G. Murray Developmental Center in
3Centralia was built in 1964 to meet the needs of children faced
4with severe developmental disabilities; and
 
5    WHEREAS, There are currently 229 residents at Murray
6Center; over half of the residents have called Murray home for
7at least 20 years; and
 
8    WHEREAS, More than half of Murray Center residents have a
9dual diagnosis of a developmental disability and a mental
10illness; 45% of the Murray residents are non-ambulatory and
11many cannot express themselves verbally and understand very
12little of the world around them; medical issues are prevalent
13and complicate even further the labor intensive needs of these
14individuals, leaving some individuals completely dependent
15upon others for every need; and
 
16    WHEREAS, In 2012, it was announced that the Warren G.
17Murray Developmental Center would close its doors; thanks to
18the dedication and hard work from the Murray Parents
19Association, Friends of Murray Center, Illinois State
20Representative John Cavaletto, Illinois State Representative
21Charlie Meier, Illinois State Senator Kyle McCarter, Governor
22Bruce Rauner, and dozens of Illinois legislators, the Murray

1Center will remain open; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The Murray Center Coalition will be hosting a
3festival and parade on October 18, 2015 to celebrate Murray
4Center remaining open; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
7designate October 18, 2015 as Murray Center Day in the State of
8Illinois to honor the residents living at the Warren G. Murray
9Developmental Center in Centralia; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
11presented to the Murray Center Coalition, the Murray Parents
12Association, and Governor Bruce Rauner in recognition of Murray
13Center Day.
