SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/27-17  from Ch. 122, par. 27-17

    Amends the School Code with respect to safety education. Requires all students enrolled in grades one through 8 in the public schools to watch a training video on cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and how to use an automated external defibrillator. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section
527-17 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/27-17)  (from Ch. 122, par. 27-17)
7    Sec. 27-17. Safety education. School boards of public
8schools and all boards in charge of educational institutions
9supported wholly or partially by the State may provide
10instruction in safety education in all grades and include such
11instruction in the courses of study regularly taught therein.
12    In this section "safety education" means and includes
13instruction in the following:
14        1. automobile safety, including traffic regulations,
15    highway safety, and the consequences of alcohol
16    consumption and the operation of a motor vehicle;
17        2. safety in the home;
18        3. safety in connection with recreational activities;
19        4. safety in and around school buildings;
20        5. safety in connection with vocational work or
21    training ; and
22        6. cardio-pulmonary resuscitation for students
23    enrolled in grades 9 through 11.

1    Such boards may make suitable provisions in the schools and
2institutions under their jurisdiction for instruction in
3safety education for not less than 16 hours during each school
4year.
5    All students enrolled in grades one through 8 in the public
6schools shall watch a training video on cardio-pulmonary
7resuscitation and how to use an automated external
8defibrillator.
9    The curriculum in all State universities shall contain
10instruction in safety education for teachers that is
11appropriate to the grade level of the teaching certificate.
12This instruction may be by specific courses in safety education
13or may be incorporated in existing subjects taught in the
14university.

17    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
18becoming law.
