| 1 | | SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Mamie Clayborne Bolden of East St. Louis, | 4 | | who passed away on January 3, 2011; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, She was born on August 12, 1927, in Wahalak, | 6 | | Mississippi, the 12th child born to the union of Jesse and | 7 | | Indiana (Stennis) Clayborne; the family moved to East St. Louis | 8 | | when she was 8; she joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church | 9 | | and was baptized by Reverend B. Haney; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, She attended John Robinson and Dunbar grade | 11 | | schools and graduated from Lincoln Sr. High with the class of | 12 | | 1947; she married Richard Bolden on Christmas Day in 1947; in | 13 | | her early married life, she worked in the partnership of the | 14 | | Eighth Street Service Station (Sinclair Service Station), an | 15 | | enterprise owned by her siblings and in-laws that operated from | 16 | | 1953 to 1965; beginning in 1973, she worked for two years as a | 17 | | receptionist in the office of Dr. A.M. Jackson; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, On June 5, 1992, she retired from the Children's | 19 | | Center for Behavioral Development after 17 years of service; | 20 | | after rearing her children, she went back to school and earned | 21 | | an associate's degree in pre-teaching from State Community | 22 | | College (Metropolitan College) in 1974; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, As a life-long member of Mt. Zion, her church | 2 | | involvement included being a Sunday School teacher, the BTU, a | 3 | | choir member, church youth director, president of the Deaconess | 4 | | Ministry, and head of special efforts such as the church | 5 | | anniversary; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Her community engagements included organizing the | 7 | | Olivette Park Neighborhood Association in 1995 and serving as | 8 | | its president for 6 years; she served on the board of the | 9 | | Lighthouse Community Development Corporation of East St. | 10 | | Louis; as an extension of her neighborhood work, it was not | 11 | | unusual to find her cleaning empty lots or alley ways in the | 12 | | neighborhood; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, She credited her children with opening up a whole | 14 | | new world to her through travel; she traveled to East Germany | 15 | | and West Germany, and again when the two became one Germany; | 16 | | she saw the Berlin Wall; in Egypt, she traveled the route along | 17 | | which Moses took the children of Israel and visited the spot | 18 | | where Moses turned the rock to water and the mountain where | 19 | | Moses died; she also visited Switzerland, India, Saudi Arabia, | 20 | | Italy, Jordan, and Puerto Rico; and | 21 | | WHEREAS, Mamie Clayborne Bolden is survived by her | 22 | | children, Richard (Fannie), Diane (Hollis Taylor Jr.), |

| 1 | | Roderick, and Pamela; her grandchildren, Francea Bolden, | 2 | | Andria Jones, Tanya Sanford (Carlos), and Rachel Taylor; her | 3 | | stepson, Henry Bolden Sr.; her brother, Calvin Clayborne; and a | 4 | | host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends; therefore, | 5 | | be it
| 6 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | 7 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | 8 | | her family and friends, the passing of Mamie Clayborne Bolden; | 9 | | and be it further
| 10 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 11 | | presented to the family of Mamie Clayborne Bolden as a symbol | 12 | | of our sincere sympathy.
