SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Delores Hutt Longley, who passed away on
4August 7, 2010; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Delores Longley was born to the union of Horace
6Hutt, Sr., and Beulah Rivere Hutt; she lived in St. Louis,
7Missouri her entire life; she married her high school
8sweetheart, James Longley, on March 31, 1945; to this union, 2
9children were born, Ronald Eric Longley and Karen Denise
10Longley (Gordy); and
 
11    WHEREAS, Delores Longley attended public schools and
12earned her bachelor's degree in education and her master's
13degree in education at Stowe Teachers College; she later earned
14her doctor of philosophy degree in urban education from Saint
15Louis University; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Delores Longley served in the St. Louis Public
17School system for 38 years; during her career, she served as a
18teacher, as principal of Carr, Dumas, and Banneker Elementary
19Schools, and as an administrator; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Delores Longley was dedicated to civil rights and
21racial equality from a young age; she served as the Director of

1the St. Louis Public School system's Desegregation Office,
2where she managed the school system's desegregation plan in
3response to court orders; she also helped individual schools
4develop curriculum to meet their specific needs concerning the
5desegregation plan; and
 
6    WHEREAS, After her retirement from the St. Louis Public
7Schools system, Delores Longley continued her great love of
8education and human and civil rights by serving as a consultant
9at Maryville University; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Delores Longley was deeply committed to her
11community and church; she was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and
12Pi Lambda Theta, professional education honor societies, and
13the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; she was raised in the Methodist
14Church, but joined the Centennial Christian Church when she
15married and she served on the Usher Board at Centennial as long
16as she was physically able; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Delores Longley enjoyed playing bridge and played
18with great passion and verve; she was a member of The Tallies
19and the Grand Dekkers bridge clubs and played regularly with
20her large circle of friends; she also enjoyed foreign travel
21with her husband and seeing the world on cruises throughout
22Europe and the Caribbean; and

1    WHEREAS, Delores Longley was preceded in death by her
2sister; 2 brothers from a previous marriage of her mother; and
3a sister and brother from a previous marriage of her father;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, During their marriage of 65 years, Delores Longley
6and James were blessed with a wonderful family, including their
72 children and their grandchildren, Rahny Longley, Juliet James
8Gordy, and Ronson Longley; Delores was also blessed with a
9sister, Jean Hutt Houston, and many nieces, nephews, cousins,
10and friends; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
12ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
13her family and friends, the passing of Delores Hutt Longley;
14and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Delores Longley as an expression of
17our sympathy.
