| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are pleased to recognize State Representative | 4 | | Suzanne "Suzie" Bassi for her years of service and hard work on | 5 | | behalf of the people of the State of Illinois; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Representative Bassi was first elected in 1998 to | 7 | | serve the people of the 54th District, which includes portions | 8 | | of Arlington Heights, Barrington, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, | 9 | | Palatine, and Rolling Meadows; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Representative Bassi taught English and French | 11 | | for 10 years before retiring to raise a family and being | 12 | | elected to the District 15 Board of Education; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Representative Bassi has received numerous awards | 14 | | throughout her years of service, including Legislator of the | 15 | | Year from the Suburban Area Agency on Aging, being named the | 16 | | Champion of Free Enterprise by the Illinois Chamber of | 17 | | Commerce, and being named a Friend of Agriculture by the | 18 | | Illinois Farm Bureau; in addition, she was also awarded a | 19 | | fellowship to the Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership | 20 | | Development; and
| 21 | | WHEREAS, During her freshman legislative year she had the |

| 1 | | opportunity to serve as a member of the United States Trade | 2 | | Mission to the Republic of South Africa, where she participated | 3 | | in the opening of the new Illinois Trade Office in | 4 | | Johannesburg, South Africa; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, There is no denying Representative Bassi, known | 6 | | for her poker face, is passionate about good public policy; she | 7 | | fought diligently against unfunded school mandates and | 8 | | frequently read the litany of classroom responsibilities of | 9 | | public school teachers such as teaching the "Three B's", | 10 | | broccoli, bladder control, and bullying, in addition to | 11 | | teaching the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Representative Bassi fought for mass transit | 13 | | improvements; downsized government through CMAP; school | 14 | | violence prevention; crackdown on gun violence; increased | 15 | | penalties for sex offenders and drug users; increased funding | 16 | | for local schools; expanded pharmaceutical coverage through | 17 | | the Circuit Breaker/IL Rx programs; increased permit and | 18 | | inspection regulations for carnival and amusement rides; and | 19 | | provided GPS tracking for victims of domestic violence through | 20 | | the Cindy Bischof Law; and
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Representative Bassi was one of nine Republicans | 22 | | to serve on the 21-member House Special Investigative Committee | 23 | | to Impeach former Governor Rod Blagojevich; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, She served as the Republican spokesperson for | 2 | | Elementary & Secondary Education, Tourism & Conventions, | 3 | | Infrastructure, and Appropriations-Elementary & Secondary | 4 | | Education House committees; and she served as a member of the | 5 | | Mass Transit, Revenue and Finance, Minority Procurement, and | 6 | | State Government Administration committees; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Representative Bassi is an active member of the | 8 | | Conference of Women Legislators, a member of the Task Force on | 9 | | Alzheimer's, and the Task Force on Re-Enrolling High School | 10 | | Drop-outs; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Representative Bassi grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, | 12 | | and later lived in Des Moines, Iowa, where she graduated from | 13 | | St. Joseph's High School in 1962; she received her Bachelor of | 14 | | Arts degree from Rosary College (now Dominican University) in | 15 | | River Forest, in 1966; and completed her MAT at the University | 16 | | of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1973; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Representative Bassi and her husband, Roger, have | 18 | | three children, Carrie, Steve, and Greg; and two grandsons; | 19 | | therefore, be it

| 4 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 5 | | presented to State Representative Suzanne "Suzie" Bassi as a | 6 | | symbol of our respect and esteem.
