AMENDMENT TO HOUSE BILL 1597

2     AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 1597 by replacing
3 everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4     "Section 5. The Counties Code is amended by changing
5 Section 4-7001 as follows:
 
6     (55 ILCS 5/4-7001)  (from Ch. 34, par. 4-7001)
7     Sec. 4-7001. Coroner's fees. The fees of the coroner's
8 office shall be as follows:
9     1. For a copy of a transcript of sworn testimony: $5.00
10 $3.00 per page.
11     2. For a copy of an autopsy report (if not included in
12 transcript): $50.00 $30.00.
13     3. For a copy of the verdict of a coroner's jury: $5.00.
14     4. For a copy of a toxicology report: $25.00 $15.00.
15     5. For a print of or an electronic file containing a
16 picture obtained by the coroner: actual cost or $3.00,

1 whichever is greater.
2     6. For each copy of miscellaneous reports, including
3 artist's drawings but not including police reports: actual cost
4 or $25.00 $15.00, whichever is greater.
5     7. For a coroner's or medical examiner's permit to cremate
6 a dead human body: $50.00 $10.00. The coroner may waive, at his
7 or her discretion, the permit fee if the coroner determines
8 that the person is indigent and unable to pay the permit fee or
9 under other special circumstances.
10     All of which fees shall be certified by the court; in the
11 case of inmates of any State charitable or penal institution,
12 the fees shall be paid by the operating department or
13 commission, out of the State Treasury. The coroner shall file
14 his or her claim in probate for his or her fees and he or she
15 shall render assistance to the State's attorney in the
16 collection of such fees out of the estate of the deceased. In
17 counties of less than 1,000,000 population, the State's
18 attorney shall collect such fees out of the estate of the
19 deceased.
20     Except as otherwise provided in this Section, whenever the
21 coroner is required by law to perform any of the duties of the
22 office of the sheriff, the coroner is entitled to the like fees
23 and compensation as are allowed by law to the sheriff for the
24 performance of similar services.
25     Except as otherwise provided in this Section, whenever the
26 coroner of any county is required to travel in the performance

1 of his or her duties, he or she shall receive the same mileage
2 fees as are authorized for the sheriff of such county.
3     All fees under this Section collected by or on behalf of
4 the coroner's office shall be paid over to the county treasurer
5 and deposited into the general fund of the county.

7     Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
8 becoming law.".
