| HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, Margaret McGlynn, esteemed resident of Belleville | 3 |
| and a senior at Althoff Catholic High School, has achieved | 4 |
| national recognition
for exemplary volunteer service by being | 5 |
| named one of the top two youth volunteers in Illinois and a | 6 |
| recipient of the 2006 Prudential Spirit of
Community Award; and
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, This prestigious award, presented by Prudential | 8 |
| Financial in
partnership with the National Association of | 9 |
| Secondary School Principals,
honors young volunteers across | 10 |
| America who have demonstrated an extraordinary
commitment to | 11 |
| serving their communities; as a State Honoree, Ms. McGlynn will | 12 |
| receive a $1,000 award, an engraved silver medallion, and a | 13 |
| trip to Washington, D.C., for a series of national recognition | 14 |
| events; and
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. McGlynn helped create a teen mentoring program | 16 |
| that has provided friendship, support, and positive role models | 17 |
| over the past three years for more than 200 severely abused and | 18 |
| neglected children in a local transitional residence; in a | 19 |
| passionate effort to ease the sadness in the young lives at the | 20 |
| Don Bosco Children's Center, she and her sister decided to | 21 |
| recruit high school volunteers to spend time with the kids and | 22 |
| hopefully help to heal their emotional wounds; and | 23 |
| WHEREAS, After filling out long government forms and | 24 |
| attending many meetings and orientation sessions on child | 25 |
| abuse, Ms. McGlynn and her sister began looking for mentors, | 26 |
| but had difficulty finding any; they encountered much prejudice | 27 |
| among their peers toward the children at Don Bosco; eventually | 28 |
| the sisters were able to persuade several schoolmates to join | 29 |
| them, and the number of mentors has increased to more than 24; | 30 |
| the high school students play games with the young children, | 31 |
| tutor and read to them, take them on field trips, and often | 32 |
| just talk or listen to them; and |

| WHEREAS, Ms. McGlynn also collects clothing, books, toys, | 2 |
| and bicycles for the Don Bosco residents and keeps in touch | 3 |
| with the children she mentors long after they leave the | 4 |
| facility; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, The success of the State of Illinois, the strength | 6 |
| of our
communities, and the overall vitality of American | 7 |
| society depends, in great
measure, upon the dedication of young | 8 |
| people like Ms. McGlynn
who use their considerable talents and | 9 |
| resources to serve others; therefore,
be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 11 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 12 |
| we congratulate and honor Margaret McGlynn for being a | 13 |
| recipient of a Prudential Spirit of Community Award, and we | 14 |
| recognize her outstanding record of volunteer service, peer | 15 |
| leadership, and community spirit; and be it further
| 16 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 17 |
| presented to Margaret McGlynn as a token of our respect and | 18 |
| esteem and with our
best wishes for her continued success and | 19 |
| happiness.
