SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of John C. "Jack" Rain of Alton, who passed away on January 7, 2014; and

WHEREAS, John Rain was born on September 25, 1923; he was the son of the late Clifford C. and Eleanor (nee Rice) Rain; he married the former Betty M. (nee Benz) Haycraft on December 27, 1946 in Alton; and

WHEREAS, John Rain graduated from Alton High School; he subsequently graduated from the University of Missouri - Columbia, where he was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity; and

WHEREAS, John Rain served as a staff sergeant in the United States Army during World War II; he was captured during the Battle of the Bulge on December 23, 1944 and remained imprisoned until April 4, 1945; and

WHEREAS, John Rain was the co-owner of the family grocery store, Rain and Rain Grocery; he began working at the store at age 8 and continued working until his retirement in 1989; and

WHEREAS, John Rain was a longtime member of Elm Street Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder; he was also a member of College Avenue Presbyterian Church in Alton; and

WHEREAS, John Rain was a member of the A-Men Group of Alton High School, the Alton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1308, the Shriners International, and a founding member of the North Alton Business Men Group (now the North Alton Godfrey Business Council); and

WHEREAS, John Rain was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter-in-law, Kathie Rain; and his brother, William "Bill" Rain; and

WHEREAS, John Rain is survived by his wife, Betty; his sons, John C. Rain, Jr. and Daniel C. Rain; his grandchildren, Rachel (Nick) Catanzaro and John Clifford Rain III; his great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Noah Catanzaro; and his sister-in-law, Nadine Rain; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of John C. "Jack" Rain; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of John Rain as an expression of our sympathy.
