SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Donald E. Eckmann, who passed away on July 4, 2013; and

WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann was born in Chicago and raised in Riverside; he was a longtime resident of Downers Grove; and

WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann graduated from Riverside-Brookfield High School and earned his Bachelor of Arts in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1956; and

WHEREAS, After college, Donald Eckmann began working for Alvord, Burdick, and Howson in Chicago, where he soon became an expert in the practice of water and wastewater engineering and was named a partner in 1969; while at the firm, he was responsible for the design of waterworks facilities in Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Virginia, Kentucky, and Monrovia, Liberia; and

WHEREAS, During his tenure at Alvord, Burdick, and Howson, Donald Eckmann served as the civil engineer responsible for overseeing the design of the Lake Michigan water supply system project, which helped lay the groundwork for more than 20 DuPage County communities to receive Lake Michigan water from Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann retired from Alvord, Burdick, and Howson in 2006; he continued as a part-time consultant at the firm following the firm's acquisition by the engineering firm of Donohue & Associates; and

WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann served as president of the Illinois Section and director of the national organization of the American Society of Civil Engineers; he also served as president of the Western Society of Engineers; and

WHEREAS, In 1989, Donald Eckmann was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from Illinois' Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association; in 1992, he was named the Civil Engineer of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers for his work on the Lake Michigan water supply system project; and

WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann is survived by his wife of 56 years, Arlene; his son, David; his daughters, Pam Kolzow and Lora Kmieciak; and his 8 grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of Donald E. Eckmann; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Donald Eckmann as an expression of our sympathy.
