HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Stephen Reid,
4Jr. for receiving the "2013 Rural Physician of Excellence
5Award" from the Illinois Rural Health Association; and
 
6    WHEREAS, One of the biggest healthcare challenges across
7our nation is the shortage of physicians who practice in rural
8settings; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Dr. Stephen Reid, Jr. earned his medical degree
10from Northwestern University in 1976 and completed his
11residency at the University of Illinois in 1982; he later
12completed his Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the Roswell Park
13Cancer Institute in 1984; and
 
14    WHEREAS, After practicing medicine in a large urban setting
15for many years, Dr. Stephen Reid, Jr. left Evanston Hospital in
161997 to embark on a career practicing in a rural area, joining
17the staff at the Weber Medical Clinic and Richland Memorial
18Hospital in Olney; and
 
19    WHEREAS, In recognition of his efforts to train medical
20students and physician assistants from Southern Illinois
21University on the challenges and benefits of practicing in

1rural areas, Dr. Stephen Reid, Jr. was awarded the "Preceptor
2of the Year" Award in 2012; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Dr. Stephen Reid, Jr. has also helped plant the
4seed to cultivate future home grown medical professionals by
5participating in "Career Days" at East Richland Middle School;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, Dr. Stephen Reid, Jr. has lent his time and
8expertise to many internal hospital committees to improve
9services provided to patients, including those centered on
10blood and tissues, ICU, long term care, patient care
11evaluation, pharmacy, surgery, and tumors; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Dr. Stephen Reid, Jr. has worked to raise
13community awareness of breast cancer and is a huge supporter of
14Richland County's Relay for Life by donning a "polyp" costume
15and running in local triathlons to raise money for cancer
16research; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we commend Dr. Stephen Reid, Jr. for his selfless service to
20his community and the impact he has made on improving rural
21health; and be it further

2presented to Dr. Reid as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
