SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Joe V. Michael of Aurora, who passed away
4on March 17, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Joe Michael was born in South Whitley, Indiana on
6October 2, 1935; he was raised in South Whitley and attended
7Larwell High School; he received a Bachelor of Arts in
8Chemistry from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana and a
9Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Rochester in New
10York; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Joe Michael began his career teaching classes as a
12postdoctoral associate at Harvard University; he worked as a
13postdoctoral associate and chemist for the Brookhaven National
14Laboratory and for Carnegie Mellon University as an associate
15professor; from 1975 to 1977, he was a research associate for
16NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and retired as a senior
17chemist at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont in December
182015; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Joe Michael had over 200 publications in science
20magazines and was a Fellow of The Combustion Institute; he was
21a member of the American Association for the Advancement of
22Science, the American Chemical Society, the American

1Geophysical Union, and the scientific research honor society
2Sigma Xi; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Joe Michael was a member of Grace United Methodist
4Church in Naperville and sang tenor with the Naperville Men's
5Glee Club; he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Valerie, and
6spoke at many chemistry symposiums and meetings in the U.S. and
7around the world; he also enjoyed fishing, singing, coaching
8basketball, Boy Scouts, Indian guides, attending concerts, and
9supporting his family; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Joe Michael was the beloved husband of over 32
11years of Valerie Michael (Jeter); the loving father of Susan
12(Tim) Maloney, Jane (Gary) Portman, Jonathan (Rochelle)
13Michael, Derek Efimetz, and Eugene Michael; the grandfather of
14Amanda, Jenna, and Olivia Maloney, Michael, Rachel, Nicole, and
15Stephen Portman, and David, Justin, and Michael Grogan; the son
16of the late Samuel Elden "Punch" Michael and Edna Emily
17Michael; the brother of Tom (Bonnie) Michael, the late Steve
18(Lois) Michael, the late Richard "Dick" (Sarah) Michael, and
19the late Mollie (the late Jim) Payne; the brother-in-law of
20Gail Norton-Locke; former spouse of Judith Michael; cousin of
21eight; and uncle, great-uncle, and friend of many; therefore,
22be it
 
23    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
2Joe V. Michael and extend our sincere condolences to his
3family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
4further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Joe Michael as an expression of our
7deepest sympathy.
