| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Ruth M. (Mortenson) Kennedy of Joliet, | 4 | | who passed away on October 11, 2018; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Ruth Kennedy was born in Barnesville, Minnesota to | 6 | | Martin and Erlyce (Nelson) Mortenson in 1936; she earned her | 7 | | degree from North Dakota State University; shortly after | 8 | | graduation, she met her future husband, Daniel Lennon Kennedy; | 9 | | and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Ruth Kennedy was a pioneer in politics and a | 11 | | lifelong environmental and animal activist; she was elected to | 12 | | the Will County Board, where she served from 1974 until 1996; | 13 | | while a member of the Forest Preserve Board, she spearheaded | 14 | | the acquisition and expansion of forest preserve land | 15 | | throughout the county; she was also one of the founding members | 16 | | of the Will County Humane Society, the original no-kill | 17 | | facility in the county; her garage served to house the first | 18 | | kennels until property was purchased in Shorewood, where the | 19 | | Humane Society still operates today; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Ruth Kennedy was preceded in death by her husband, | 21 | | Daniel; her parents; and her siblings, Renee Edenstrom, Bud | 22 | | Mortenson, Anne Daly, Edna Christenson, and Harriett Gooddahl; |

| 2 | | WHEREAS, Ruth Kennedy is survived by her children, Daniel | 3 | | (fiance Gigi Studer) Kennedy, Hayes (Gloria) Kennedy, and | 4 | | Thomas (Laina) Kennedy; her grandchildren, Erin, Madeline, | 5 | | Neera, Ahsha, Kieran, and Cash Kennedy; and her many nieces and | 6 | | nephews; therefore, be it
| 7 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | 8 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 9 | | Ruth M. (Mortenson) Kennedy and extend our sincere condolences | 10 | | to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be | 11 | | it further
| 12 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 13 | | presented to the family of Ruth Kennedy as an expression of our | 14 | | deepest sympathy.
