SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Rockford Peaches were a women's professional
3baseball team that played from 1943 through 1954 in the
4All-American Girls Professional Baseball League; and
 
5    WHEREAS, With America's entry into World War II, several
6major league baseball executives decided to start a new
7professional baseball league with women players in order to
8maintain baseball in the public eye while the majority of men
9were away; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The Rockford Peaches played their home games at
11Beyer Stadium on 15th Avenue in Rockford; they won league
12titles in 1945, 1948, 1949, and 1950; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Rockford Peaches who were named to all-star teams
14included Dorothy Kamenshek, Lois Florreich, Dorothy Harrell,
15Carolyn Morris, Alice Pollitt, Ruth Richard, Rose Gacioch,
16Eleanor Callow, and Joan Berger; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The Rockford Peaches were immortalized in the 1992
18film, A League of Their Own, which was directed by Penny
19Marshall and starred Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty,
20Madonna, and Rosie O'Donnell, and gave us the classic line
21"There's no crying in baseball!"; and

1    WHEREAS, The International Women's Baseball Center, in
2partnership with Friends of Beyer Stadium, will hold a series
3of events on May 30 through June 3, 2018 to celebrate the
4Rockford Peaches' 75th anniversary; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
6ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare the week of
7May 30 to June 5, 2018 as "Rockford Peaches Week" in the State
8of Illinois; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
10presented to the International Women's Baseball Center,
11Friends of Beyer Stadium, and the City of Rockford.
