SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Service to others is a hallmark of the American
3character, and central to how we meet our challenges; and
 
4    WHEREAS, The nation's counties, cities, and local
5governments are increasingly turning to national service and
6volunteerism as a cost-effective strategy to meet their needs;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, AmeriCorps and Senior Corps participants address
9the most pressing challenges facing our communities, from
10educating students for the jobs of the 21st century, to
11fighting the opioid epidemic, to responding to natural
12disasters, to supporting veterans and military families; and
 
13    WHEREAS, National service expands economic opportunity by
14creating more sustainable, resilient communities and providing
15education, career skills, and leadership abilities for those
16who serve; and
 
17    WHEREAS, AmeriCorps and Senior Corps participants serve in
18more than 50,000 locations across the country, bolstering the
19civic, neighborhood, and faith-based organizations that are so
20vital to our economic and social well-being; and

1    WHEREAS, National service participants increase the impact
2of the organizations they serve, both through their direct
3service and by managing millions of additional volunteers; and
 
4    WHEREAS, National service represents a unique
5public-private partnership that invests in community solutions
6and leverages non-federal resources to strengthen community
7impact and increase the return on taxpayer dollars; and
 
8    WHEREAS, National service participants demonstrate
9commitment, dedication, and patriotism by making an intensive
10commitment to service, a commitment that remains with them in
11their future endeavors; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The Corporation for National and Community
13Service shares a priority with local leaders nationwide to
14engage citizens, improve lives, and strengthen communities; it
15is joining with the National League of Cities, the National
16Association of Counties, Cities of Service, and local leaders
17across the country for National Service Recognition Day on
18April 3, 2018; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize April 3,
212018 as National Service Day in the State of Illinois, and we
22encourage citizens to recognize the positive impact of national

1service in their communities, to thank those who serve, and to
2find ways to give back.
